Beedie Partnership with HQ Vancouver

HQ Vancouver, in partnership with the Jack Austin Centre for Asia-Pacific Business Studies at Simon Fraser University Beedie School of Business, is leading a series of forums to promote the growth of B.C. as a global business hub. The forums are held as part of the HQ Conversation Series.

The primary purpose of the Series is to raise awareness in the local business and thought leadership communities about the existing strengths in the BC business ecosystem that support the growth of headquarters operations. We take a broad definition of headquarters, one that includes both regional and global HQ’s of large companies, but also includes the importance of home-grown headquarters, and the location of high value-added segments of global supply chains. Thus, we see the HQ question as involving an ecosystem of different types of firms and activities. We hope to make these sessions relatively informal in order to promote frank and open dialogue, and thus restrict the audience to about 50-100 invitees as well as media.

The Series will feature a particular sector or ‘anchor tenant’ operating in BC and, through a conversation facilitated by a moderator we will learn about what assets and strengths BC has to offer and what challenges exist to maintain and grow HQ functions in that sector. As well, the conversation will highlight what opportunities exist to expand and grow the existing clusters to increase the province’s capacity and reputation as a hub for business seeking to expand into North America or into Asia.

Canada has an excellent record in invention, but struggles with innovation. In particular, scientific inventions of a radical, generic nature, with high potential economic and social value, can languish in the lab because of prolonged uncertainty and high commercialization costs. Drawing on her research in the advanced materials, nanotech, biotech, and clean tech sectors, Professor Maine will offer commercialization strategies for scientist-entrepreneurs.
