Certificate in Business Analytics and Decision Making

The Beedie School of Business offers its major and joint major undergraduate students the opportunity to pursue a Business Analytics and Decision Making Certificate.  Note that this is only open to students already enrolled in the undergraduate program.  The certificate is earned by taking three courses in Data and Statistics and five upper level courses across three concentrations: Management of information Systems, Marketing, and Operations Management. In addition, a ninth capstone course, designed for the certificate, is being offered, where students will apply their knowledge to a real world project by working with an analytics group in a local company under the guidance of an instructor.

The certificate is motivated by the rapid growth in the use of large data sets and sophisticated analytic methods in business decisions, which in turn is driven by the improvement in competitiveness and profitability that these methods provide. According to a recent McKinsey report, in the United States alone, “the demand for people with the deep analytical skills (including machine learning and advanced statistical analysis) could outstrip current projections of supply by 50 to 60 percent. By 2018, as many as 140,000 to 190,000 additional specialists may be required.also needed: an additional 1.5 million managers and analysts with a sharp understanding of how big data can be applied."

Beyond providing data management and analysis skills, the certificate courses emphasize problem definition, business understanding, and technical communication skills that are especially critical for managers who may not be specialists but who will require that sharp understanding.

The certificate is guided by an advisory board of industry professionals to ensure relevance in this new and fast-evolving field.
