Why Compete?

Training Program

The Beedie School of Business participates in numerous business case competitions at leading schools around the world. To better prepare, we are changing the way we prepare, select and train students. Beginning this summer, we will be providing formalized training for the upcoming competitions.

The program runs twice a year beginning the second week of each corresponding semester and runs for 8-10 weeks. 20-25 students are selected to participate in the case cohort program and students successfully completing the program will be considered first for official SFU Beedie competition teams.

Application Process

If you are Beedie student wanting to participate in an intercollegiate competition, you need to determine if you are eligible to apply and then successfully complete the application process. Competitors will be selected based on their academic performance, competitive skills and performance in the case cohort program.

To be eligible to compete you must...

  • Be able to commit several hours a week, up to 6 months prior to the competition and be available for training workshops throughout the semester (usually weekends)
  • Registered as full-time or co-op student for the semester of the competition.
  • Have a minimum 2.60 CGPA
  • Be a participant in the case cohort program in the semester relating to the competition you are applying for
  • Have strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Have excellent presentation skills

How The Process Works

  • Fill out the Application form for the competition(s) you are interested in, prior to the closing date. Under no circumstances will late applications be accepted.
  • All Applications must be filled in accurately and completely, failure to do so may result in the rejection of your application. Please double check your information is correct before you submit the application.
  • All Applications will be reviewed and selected based on the merits of the application. We will make our best effort to interview as many qualified applicants as possible. However, only those selected for an interview will be contacted.
  • Applications will be reviewed by the Student Engagement Office and the Faculty team coach.
  • The team coach will make the final selections based on interviewing the candidates.
  • Each candidate may be asked to make a short presentation to demonstrate their presentation and communication skills.
  • We will select one alternate for each team. The alternate will practice with the team, but is not guaranteed to compete that year. However, they will be given selection priority for the following years competition.

  • Please target your application to each type of competition you apply for. Previous applications will not be used for current competition selection. What will be helpful if you intend to be applying for more than one competition is to create a word document where you can store your previous responses and edit them for future applications.

SPRING 2013

JDC West – Vancouver -  January 18-20, 2013

Jeux de Commerce is one of the largest competitions based on team participation. While most competitions have anywhere from 2-4 participants, JDC is comprised of 52 students. From each institution, there is an academic, sport and social component to the competition. There are ten separate categories for the case competition component. SFU has participated each year since 2006. In 2013, SFU won Academic School of the year. 

ICBC – Kingston – Finals – January 3-5, 2013

Eight students qualified for the final ICBC round at Queen's University. Due to SFU qualifying four teams teams (Ethics, Finance, Marketing and MIS), SFU was also invited to the Debate competition.


BBICC – Belgrade –  April 2-7, 2013

Four students will represent SFU as one of 12 teams invited from around the world. This is a 30 hour case competion with a case that will include various business fields, and may cross-cover any of the following topics: finance, accounting, marketing, human resources, entrepreneurship, strategy, and international business and policy.

The Royal Roads University International Undergraduate Case Competition allows four students and an observer in each participating team. This is a general case competition so the students should have a diverse background. Most of the students, but not all, should have past case competition experience.


ICC@M – Maastricht –  April 21-27, 2013

Four students will represent SFU as one of 12 teams invited from around the world. The Beedie School of Business, SFU participates in academic and business plan competitions throughout North America, internationally and internally. Nearly 100 students have participated in the external opportunities and over 250 participated in the internal opportunities.

ICBC – Queens – Preliminary – October 2010 (Finals – January 2011)

The Inter-Collegiate Business Competition is one of the most prestigious case competition in Canada. There are seven categories of cases and top schools are invited to also send a debate team. SFU participates in all seven categories of Accounting, Ethics, Finance, Marketing, MIS, HR and Policy. Universities are provided preliminary cases in the fall semester and through the preliminary cases, short listed teams are invited early in the spring to Queens for the finals.

Citi International Case Competition – Hong Kong – November 2010

Four students representing SFU will attend the competition sponsored by Citibank group. SFU first participated in this event in 2008.

Dalhousie Ethics Case Competition – Nova Scotia – November 11-13, 2010

Four students representing SFU compete in an event which focuses specifically on business ethics and corporate social responsibility.

SFU Finance Competition – Vancouver – November 13, 2010

An SFU organized North American competition that is developed for students in North America. A preliminary case will be sent out to participating schools and from this, a short listing of schools will attend the finals in Vancouver.

An SFU organized marketing case competition that is 24 hour in structure and comprises of three students per team. Most teams are within British Columbia but the outreach is also North America

MMICC – McGill – Montreal – March 22-26, 2011

The McGill Management International Case Competition (MMICC) is an undergraduate business case competition hosted by the Desautels Faculty of Management of McGill University and held annually in Montreal, Canada. The competition is completely student-run, with the full support of McGill University. Since 2001, a selection of top business schools is invited each year from all corners of the globe. SFU has been invited and participated in 2007 and 2008.

CaseIT – SFU – February 2-5, 2011

CaseIT is the premier MIS competition in Canada and has gone global. The participating teams are comprised of three students and a minimum of two of the three students should have an MIS background. Students should have past business academic competition experience. The competition is a 24 hour case analysis.

An international case competition where 16 top business schools attend to do two 3 hour cases and one 24 hour case.

This competition is very similar to CaseIT. The participating teams are comprised of three students and a minimum of two of the three students should have an MIS background. Students should have past business academic competition experience. The competition is a 24 hour case analysis.

SIFE (formerly ACE)

SFU supports SIFE (Students in Free Enterprise). The SFU chapter is in place to promote awareness and education on entrepreneurship. There is a western regional competition in Calgary and a national competition in Toronto (2010 in Calgary first time) where teams are invited to showcase the work that the university chapters have done to promote and help communities. SFU has a strong chapter the last couple of years. At the SIFE Nationals, there are 50 schools from across Canada that participate and network.

INTERNAL COMPETITIONS

Ken Spencer Business Plan Competition – Fall

An internal competition where a team of engineers from ENSC 201 are paired with a business student from Bus 477 to work on a business plan throughout the semester from a concept to delivery of a presentation on their idea.

Peak Performance – July

An internal 24 hour case competition where a team of three students with less than 60 credit hours are coached by a student with more than 60 credit hours. This competition provides an opportunity to understand what a case competition is all about.

Elite Case Challenge – July

An internal 24 hour case competition where a team of three students with more than 60 credit hours compete to build on their competition experiences.

Social Innovation Case Competition (SICCC) – Spring

An internal competition where teams of four examine and present on a 24 hour case in social innovation.
