Visiting and Non-degree Students
A"Visiting Student" is a student who is coming to SFU from another post secondary institution, to take courses at SFU, for transfer to their degree requirements at their home institution. A Visiting Student must be admitted to SFU.
A "Non-degree Student" is a student who is coming to SFU to take courses out of personal interest or to fulfill requirements for an outside institution, accrediting body or to meet the admission requirements to the Second or Subsequent Undergraduate Degree in Business Administration. A Non-degree Student must be admitted to SFU.
Visiting and Non-degree Students will only be allowed access to the lower division Business core requirement classes. Upon applying to SFU and being accepted, visiting students are able to register in Bus 251, Bus 237, and Bus 272 without contacting an advisor. If a visiting student wishes to access any other lower division business/buec courses, they must contact the Undergraduate Business Department (ugrec@sfu.ca) for possible clearance to register.
Both visiting and non-degree students need to be aware of the following limitations regarding access to Bus 300 level Business courses:
- students must first meet general university requirements and deadlines to take courses at Simon Fraser University. Contact General Admissions at 778-782-3397 or apply on line at http://students.sfu.ca/ps/
- visiting or non-Degree students may not register in Bus 300 level courses until the day before classes begin for each semester. Visiting or non-Degree students will have the ability to add and swap business courses during week 1 of the semester, but will not be permitted to add upper division courses in weeks 2 and 3, or overload in upper division courses in weeks 1, 2, and 3. Prior registration access is restricted to students approved in a Business degree program.
- please note registration in all 300 and 400 level Accounting concentration courses are only available for students approved in Business and the Accounting Concentration.
- registration in BUS 360W is only available for students who are approved in Business
- in order to register for Bus 300 level courses during week 1 (including the day prior to the first day of classes), individual course clearances must be entered into the registration system, for Visiting or Non-degree students.
- there must be space in the course, specifically during week 1( including the day prior to the first day of classes)
- access is not granted at any time after day five of week 1
Visiting and non-degree students will not be allowed access to 400 level Business courses.
For registration in Bus 300 level courses:
Step I. Consult with Undergraduate Business Department at ugrec@sfu.ca regarding your preparation for the 300 level BUS course(s) you propose to take. It may be necessary to obtain the approval of the instructor(s) if your preparation level is unclear. At this time you will also be able to get some information regarding the possibility of space for "Visiting" or "Non-degree" students.
Step II. Well before the day before classes begin for each semester, please contact Undergraduate Business Department at ugrec@sfu.ca and indicate which courses you wish to take. Any prerequisite issues would have to be resolved by this date (see Step I. above).
Step III. Register as early as possible on the day before classes begin for each semester.
Important notes:
- There must be space in the course when you try and register
- The Faculty of Business does not permit late adds (ie after the 5th day of classes) for non-degree or visiting students.
- A course will not be overloaded with a non-degree or visiting student.
