FBA Writing Mentor Schedules

Posted on:

Drop-in Schedule

Each drop-in visit lasts a maximum of 30 minutes. These visits are not pre-booked. They are on a first-come, first-serve basis. There is no limit to how many drop-in sessions you can attend each week. In addition to these drop-ins, you are welcome to book a 1-hour appointment each week with a mentor (these appointments are subject to mentor availability). To book an appointment, see the Appointment Sign-up Sheet outside WMX 4371.

NOTE: You do not sign-up for drop-in sessions.  Just come by the mentor office (WMX 4371) when the sessions are running. If a designated appointment hour is not pre-booked or a student does not show up for an appointment, the appointment will run as a drop-in hour.

Appointment Schedule

Each appointment runs for a maximum of 1 hour. Since there is a high demand for appointments, you can only sign-up for one appointment each week. You can, however, go to the drop-in sessions in addition to your one appointment. Sign your FIRST and LAST names on the form.

NOTE: Only one student can sign up in each 1-hour appointment.

To make the best of your time with your mentor, please come prepared:

  • Bring a piece of writing and picture I.D. (e.g. student card, UPass, Driver’s Licence)
  • Have an idea in terms of what kind of help you think you need
  • If you are working on an assignment, bring a copy of your professor?s instructions for the assignment.
Week of June 29th—July 3

Or maybe you’re someone who wants to hone their stock trading skills while competing for cash prizes and a letter of commendation?

The BC Stock Game 2009 offers beginners and veterans alike an opportunity to practice their skills in a friendly realistic trading environment involving both SFU and UBC students. The best traders at the end of the competition will get a cash prize while many more may get letters of commendation for beating either the S&P 500 or TSX. Based around the Investopedia simulator platform, traders will get the opportunity to invest across North American markets using many of the tools available to real traders. For those just starting out, help will be available so you can start having fun immediately.

Here are the important facts:

What is the duration of the competition?: From October 12, 2009 to March 8, 2010
How much? $10 per student
How much are the cash prizes? They will be based on how many people enter. The more competitors, the bigger the prizes! See rules for more information.
How do I get a letter of commendation? If you manage to beat either the S&P 500 or the TSX and are among the top 25% traders, you will receive one.
Where are the rules? They’re attached here.

To sign up, just follow these simple steps:

1) Register an account at Investopedia using the following link: http://join.investopedia.com/simulator/join1?RegLink=Simulator_Header
2) Fill out the BC Stock Game form at: http://spreadsheets.google.com/viewform?hl=en&formkey=dGhOY1FRNm9pUjk3TUxZUkFIUWxSLXc6MA..

4) Receive an invitation to join and get trading!

Registration opens September 28 and ends November 13.

In addition to the competition itself, the SFU Finance Club will be hosting a launch party on Wednesday October 7 from 2:30pm to 4:30pm which will include free food and drinks as well as a speaker on general investment who will go over the various trading options available. If you’re just beginning to trade stocks or just want to meet fellow participants over free food, come out and have fun!

[SIFE] Student Entrepreneur of the Year – November 14

Posted on:

Already have your own business and ready to show it off to the world? Just starting up and need some direction? Interested in entrepreneurship and want to learn how to start your dream company?

Then come out to the Student Entrepreneur of the Year Competition, hosted by SIFE Simon Fraser & Venture Connection.
When?: November 14, 2009

Where?: SFU Harbour Center in Vancouver
Who?: Everyone! Even if you don’t own your own business, there’s something that day for you!

A successful candidate for the Student Entrepreneur of the Year award must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current part/full-time undergraduate/graduate student at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, Surrey, or Vancouver)
  • Have been in business for at least six months (as of September 28, 2009)
  • Must be a revenue-producing business
  • Be under the age of 30 (as of September 28, 2009)
  • Have at least 50% ownership of the company and be principally responsible for its operation

The first round of the competition will consist of an online application evaluating your business’ plan, profits and impact. Applications will be open on September 28th, 2009 online at – http://www.sfusey.com

The finalists of the competition will present their businesses to a panel of industry professionals, who will then test the finalists with a Q & A period.

In the end, the finalists will be judged objectively, based on their presentation performance and the criteria set out by the judging panel. SFU’s Student Entrepreneurship of the Year 2009 is based on the idea that competition fuels innovation, motivation equals perspiration, and risk provides an even sweeter reward. SEY will put the students of Simon Fraser University to the test in a high-stakes environment like no other.

The winner of SEY may then move onto compete against other student entrepreneurs from across Western Canada in the ACE Regionals Entrepreneurship Competiton. Last year’s SEY winner Milun Tesovic, co-founder of MetroLeap Media, carried forward to win both the Regional and National ACE Student Entrepreneur Competition. The SEY competition has exposed Metroleap Media to new audiences nationally and internationally, and they are currently one of the most visited music lyrics websites in the world.

This year for SEY, there will be two competitions: the SEY competition and Best New Entrepreneur. The newly introduced Best New Entrepreneur competition recognizes businesses that have a great business model and idea but are just beginning operations. The criteria for entry is identical to SEY except applicants must have been in business for less than six months.

A successful candidate for the Best New Entrepreneur award must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a current part/full-time undergraduate/graduate student at Simon Fraser University (Burnaby, Surrey, or Vancouver)
  • Have been in business for less than six months (as of September 28, 2009)
  • Must be a revenue-producing business
  • Be under the age of 30 (as of September 28, 2009)
  • Have at least 50% ownership of the company and be principally responsible for its operation

In addition to the competition, a 2 hour workshop and discussion panel will be offered to those who are not in the competition, but are interested in entrepreneurship. While running the same day as the competition, the workshop will provide an opportunity for interested participants to learn about the different avenues of running a business, the goals for a successful venture, and how to take that leap into becoming an entrepreneur.

In addition to the competition and workshop offered this year, we will also be featuring a networking lunch. Held near the SFU Harbour Center, this event will provide the opportunity for students to interact and network with industry entrepreneurs. More information on this is soon to come!
