Alumni Annual Appeal Calling Program Job Description

POSITION TITLE:
Alumni Annual Appeal Student Fundraiser

DESCRIPTION:
The SFU Alumni Appeal Student Calling Program is a fundraising appeal conducted each year by the University and the Alumni Association.  SFU students are hired and trained to make telephone calls to more than 60,000 Simon Fraser graduates.  These calls help to build positive relationships with our alumni, and raise funds for students and programs, like scholarships, bursaries, the library and more.

As a student fundraiser, you will have the opportunity to earn money and prizes while meeting new people in an upbeat and energized environment.

The skills you gain in this position are transferable to any job you take in the future.  Future employers looking at your resume will ask you about this position. They are always interested in hiring people that have the skills that you will learn and enhance in this position.

An email that was recently received from a Spring 2008 Fundraiser:

“I am having a great summer in Ottawa doing co-op right now. In fact, it is an 8 month term and that means I will be staying in Ottawa until the end of the year. My experience with the calling campaign has helped me a lot in terms of telemarketing, fundraising, working with non profit, building up my confidence on the phone, and networking. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to experience all of this.” … Christina

QUALIFICATIONS:
Strong communication skills, ability to work alone and as a member of a team, positive attitude, self-motivation and enthusiasm; punctuality and consistent attendance are a must.  This position requires a great deal of professionalism and good telephone manners.  Please be available to work any 2-3 shifts per week.

Previous telephone and/or fundraising experience is an asset, but not required.  Paid training will be provided.

LENGTH OF POSITION:
September 27, 2010 to December 2, 2010 (Training on September 25 AND 26)

$ 10.00 per hour, plus cash bonuses and prizes.
Pay increased depending on leadership and performance.

Career Tip of the Week (August 23rd – 27th): Send a Thank You Card/Email

Posted on:

Within 24 hours after an interview, it is always a good idea to send a thank you card or email to each of your interviewers (be sure to tailor the card/email to each!). In your thank you message, restate your interest in the position, mention something specific you learned, and summarize why you feel you are a strong candidate (you may also wish to highlight a strength or skill you might have forgotten to mention during the interview). Make sure the message is professional and does not contain any grammatical or spelling errors. To save yourself time, you can bring blank thank you cards with you. After the interview, fill out the cards and give them to the receptionist to give to each interviewer! Between equal candidates, a thank you letter can be what secures the offer!!
