Branding Yourself Workshop

The SFU Student Marketing Association and SFU Business Career Management Centre present a workshop on how to network and present yourself in front of industry professionals. This two-hour event will be joined by guest speaker Heidi Van Roon from W!N W!N Strategies (see biography in Career Network) and will include a short question and answer period. This workshop is open to all SFU Business students and is ideal for preparing for your best performance in any small or large networking event.

Date: Thursday, November 4, 2010

Time: 3:30pm – 5:30pm
Location: Halpern Centre room 126

Dress: Business Casual

RSVP: To register for this event, visit Career Network www.sfubusiness.ca/careernetwork

About the Guest Speaker: “Heidi Van Roon has over 15 years of experience as an entrepreneur and as a business and professional consultant.  She completed her EMBA at SFU in 2004 and since then has developed critical growth strategies for privately held companies through employment and through contract engagements.  She has been a mentor for the Canadian Youth Business Foundation and for the Leaders Of Tomorrow program at the Vancouver Board of Trade.  She is a founding member for the Langleyhill Housing Society as well as a member of the Government Budget and Finance Task Force for the Vancouver Board of Trade. Most recently she has founded “Blitz & Bloom” with the mandate to ‘bring talent to market’ in the area of music, art and design. She also holds a contract with one of Canada’s premier Sales placement agencies as Director Business Development – Western Canada. Throughout her career she has participated in 100’s if not 1000’s of interviews as a candidate or as an interviewer.  She is passionate about passing along the “behind the scenes” information vital for honing the job search and for nailing interviews and dealing with compensation questions and negotiations.  Most importantly, she addresses the nuances in today’s labor market and makes recommendations around some career development strategies that will help position candidates for a rewarding and satisfying career.  Since developing this seminar material on the current labor market and the resultant effects on candidates she has received invitations to speak at The Working Super Fair, Capilano University, Langara College and the Career Education Society. She also offers this material in an expanded format through W!N W!N Strategies -  her business and professional consulting brand”.  www.heidivanroon.com

Career Tip of the Week (Nov 1 – 5, 2010): Transferable Skills

Posted on:

Developing an awareness of your skills will help you to articulate them when you’re networking, in your resume and cover letter, and during interviews. Many people know intuitively what they are good at, but have difficulty putting this self-knowledge into words. Your goal should be to communicate this effectively in order to make a good first impression! Refer to the Transferable Skills guide within the Document Library on Career Network for a list of skills divided into categories. Read through the list, underline the skills that you have and truly enjoy using, then think of specific examples that can support those!

The Good Drive – Call for Donations – November 7

Posted on:

We are a project group in BUS 361 – Project Management class who will be holding a one-day donation drive event called The Good Drive. It is a one day event where individuals, friends and families from across the Lower Mainland can come together and drop off household goods required by individuals or families to maintain a basic standard of living. Often times than not while searching for items to donate, we miss out on our household items that we no longer need. These items can help new families or those underprivileged get started on their new homes or to replace the items that they might need.

The Good Drive is a way for our community to come together and give back.  The goal of this event is to raise awareness and receive donations that will go directly to local charitable organizations, such as Gather and Give (a non-profit organization that acts as in inventory of donated items for other organizations to access) and The Salvation Army. These organizations benefit various marginalized groups in Vancouver, mostly low income families and people living below the poverty line, hence improving the standard of their living.

So… When and where will The Good Drive be held?

Sunday, November 7th, 2010

10 am – 4 pm

Parking lot at Gilmore Ave and Hasting St.

What exactly is happening on the day of the event?

As you know, the event is one day donation drive that aims to gather household items. To thank you for opening your hearts and helping to improve our community, we will have a photo booth, magician, prizes for donors, and food & drinks.

So come join us with your friends and families, rain or shine, on Sunday Nov 7th, 2010.

For a complete list of donation items we are accepting & for more information, please visit our website at http://www.thegooddrive.ca or email info@thegooddrive.ca.
