[JDC West] Sport & Social Applications are opened! | Due: September 14

Posted on:

Snow Battle. Intensity. Flag-Football. Most grueling social challenges you will ever have.

JDC West challenges you to try-out for the sport or social team!

We are looking for people to compete on our sport team to play Flag-Football and Yukigassen! As well we are looking for determined and wildly energetic  competitors for our Social Team!

What is JDC West?

JDC West is the largest business competition in Western Canada where the top 11 universities compete for the title School of the Year. In order to win the title, each university must demonstrate excellence in academics, sport, social and spirit. The competition will be held in January 2012 in Edmonton, Alberta.

Why should you be a part of the sport or social team?

Past JDC West competitors consistently say JDC West is the highlight of their undergraduate careers so do not miss out on this opportunity! Becoming a part of this team will allow you to meet great people and develop your team spirit and school pride! Make connections and build relationships and of course, help Team Beedie win School of the Year!

How can you participate?

Sport Team: We are looking for 5 males and 3 females to compete on our flag-football and Yukigassen team (they will be playing both sports). For those unfamiliar with Yukigassen, it is a sport that combines two popular high school games: dodgeball and capture the flag. The goal of the game is to capture the other team’s flag while not getting hit by snowballs in doing so. Yukigassen will be played in outdoors, snowy Alberta where snow-forts will be an aspect of this game as well.

Sport Tryouts: Monday, September 19th and Thursday, September 23rd. Both will be held at night.

Social Team: This team is not for the faint-hearted. In 48 hours the social team will compete in 10 different challenges entirely in costume. These challenges will include physical, mental, as well as eating challenges. It is the most emotionally and physically draining team to take part in. However, if you are up for a challenge we are looking for 2 males and 2 females who are determined and up for a challenge.

Social Tryout: Wednesday, September 22nd. We will not tell you the time nor place until 24 hours before it begins.

If you have any questions or concerns feel free to ask Ashley Cho at sfujdcwest2012@gmail.com

We are looking for people who are competitive, have tons of team spirit and are willing to work HARD!

JDC West has been repeatedly described as the highlight of students’ undergraduate careers – Be part of the experience this year!

What is JDC West?

JDC West is the largest business competition in Western Canada where the top 11 universities compete for the title School of the Year. Becoming a competitor for one of the academic teams will provide a valuable experience that will not only enhance your undergraduate education but provide further benefit to future prospects such as co-op jobs and internships. Many employers recognize the value of case competitions and certain companies specifically look for students who have JDC West experience on their resumes.

With over 600 students competing in this competition, this will be a great networking opportunity to meet people from all across Canada. More importantly, you will get to learn from coaches, alumni and faculty that will give you not only more in-depth knowledge about case competitions but about the real business world as well.

Thinking Ahead

Now is a great time to identify the skills you’ll need to acquire or develop over the next couple of semesters before you graduate so that you can plan your time accordingly during the school year. Are you planning to embark on a career dealing with clients upon graduation? Then make sure to find opportunities to work on your interpersonal and communications skills – you can find a part-time job in sales or customer service, volunteer your time at events where you will have the opportunity to interact with industry professionals, or participate in Toastmasters. Do you thrive on using your analytical skills to identify solutions to problems and want to build on this interest? Hone your analysis skills by participating in case competitions, or find a part-time job that will allow you to analyze data or assist the company in finding solutions to business issues. No matter what skill it is, there are a variety of opportunities out there for you to develop your abilities in these areas, you just need to take the first step and seek them out!

The Importance of Informational Interviews

Many students are unsure of what job or career they want to pursue once they graduate. A useful way to conduct research on a variety of occupations, companies, and industries, is to talk to someone who is working in the industry.  In addition to sourcing relevant contacts through your network and friends, using LinkedIn to identify appropriate contacts is also a great tool.  When reaching out to contacts to request an informational interview, make sure to provide a brief introduction of who you are, state why you are interested in that particular company/industry, and be honest about why you would like to speak with that individual (to seek advice or information – NOT to ask for a job!).  Ask for 15 – 20 minutes of the person’s time and prepare your questions in advance of the meeting.   During the meeting, be sure to stay focused and stick with your list of questions but also allow for spontaneous discussion.  Take notes and pay careful attention to what is being said.  You may share some of your background but be careful not to dominate the conversation as the time should be about gathering information about the job, industry, or company.  Be sure to ask your contact if he/she has suggestions of other people you could speak with in other organizations.  Make sure to finish the interview within the agreed time frame, and always follow up each meeting with a thank you.

Recently named one of the world’s 100 best employment sites (Weddle, 2009), Eluta is a search engine that specializes in just one thing: finding new job announcements at employers across Canada and bringing them to one handy location where you are able to search them by job title, qualification or employer. You can also set up email notification to automatically receive job postings that match your search requirements.

Neat Feature: This feature isn’t neat, it’s amazing! Eluta has detailed information on companies that have won awards under the umbrella of “Canada’s Top 100 Employers” (as featured in Maclean’s magazine) and the efforts undertaken to win those awards. Subset of the main awards are awards by geographic region (e.g. BC’s Top 50 Employers) and awards for achievements in specific focus areas including: new Canadians, Diversity, Greenest and New Grads. The New Grad review can include information on highlights for new grads, hiring locations, typical positions for new grads, typical academic backgrounds, average starting salary and number of new entry level positions last year.
