Posted on:

Date: Wednesday, July 11th

Time: 10:30am to 12:30pm

RSVP: On Beedie Community (http://community.sfu.ca/beedie) “Beedie School of Business Calendar” under Events.

Do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Research shows that only 2% of professionals are working in the career they believed they would be in when they were 18 years old.

Whether you are trying to choose a concentration or figure out which careers might be a fit for you, this workshop will help you identify where you fit. This workshop and the corresponding self-assessment tool, Career Leader, will help you discover your own interests, skills and motivators and how to explore and gain valuable experience in those areas. Career Leader was designed by staff at Harvard and is used at most of the top ranked business schools. This assessment will help you start identifying where you best fit including how you match to 33 top business careers. You will see industry sketches and career descriptions, get insights into which organizational cultures may be the best match for your own unique personality and where your personal career challenges may lie. You will come away from this workshop with a better understanding of how to incorporate your interests into your career and academic planning through activities, discussion and take-home resources.

*Note: The online Career-Leader self-assessment must be completed prior to attending the workshop – it takes approximately 45 minutes to complete.

We are piloting this new workshop and registration is open all Beedie students. CMC will cover the $25 cost of the self-assessment so this workshop is free of charge. Space is limited so please sign up early.

Bus 450-3 Emerging Technologies and Business | Fall 2012

Posted on:

Instructors: Jan Kietzmann and Ashish Gurung
Monday’s 2:30 – 5:20pm
Surrey Campus, room 5380
Pre-reqs: Bus 360W, 60 units
Enrollment Code: 6798

This course can be used in the Entrepreneurship & Innovation, Management and Technology, Management of Innovation and Entrepreneurship concentrations.

Course Description:
This course aims to develop the students’ understanding of how individuals, communities and organizations make use of Social Media principles and platforms to engage with one another and to develop innovative business models.

Bus450 will be co-taught by Jan Kietzmann and Ashish Gurung. Fundamentals of innovation related to Social Media and Business will be introduced by Jan. Ashish, an active Social Media consultant, a 2010 SFU Business alumnus, and one of Surrey’s Top 25 under 25, will add a practice-lens to the discussion.

No prior Social Media knowledge is required. Topics will introduce and discuss “social” frameworks (e.g. reciprocity and fairness), concepts (e.g. community building, conversation curation, virality), and Social Media ethics, terms, tools andtechniques (e.g. for measuring and monitoring activity and ROI). Together, these will provide a well-rounded perspective for Social Media newcomers and experts alike.

For students with relevant experience, Bus450 will be an opportunity to reflect, question and improve their own approaches to managing Social Media.

The material in the course will be introduced through assigned readings and through seminars by invited guest speakers, when appropriate. Class-discussions play a major role in Bus450, and will sharpen the participants’ ability to monitor social, cultural, commercial and technical developments, to assess emerging trends and to recognize Social Media business opportunities.

The course is well suited for students interested in innovation, managing existing and emerging technologies, entrepreneurship, and careers as consultants or analysts.

See attached course outline for further details.

Questions about the course? Contact Jan at jan_kietzmann@sfu.ca or Ashish at hello@ashishgurung.ca

If you answered yes, and you still haven’t started because you don’t know the next steps, or you need that extra push or nudge in the right direction, apply to the SEY accelerator.

The SEY accelerator is an eight-week program that takes 5 ventures teams with an idea to start-up business phase.  Beginning September 15th, 2012, weekly meetups will equip the teams with knowledge, experience, practice and feedback through the use of external speakers, mentors, challenges, funding, and deliverables.  The goal is to provide a supportive and resourceful environment for businesses to be launched.  On November 24, 2012, teams will present their progress during the SEY Competition to judges and potential investors for funding.
