The Refinery Leadership Partners – Volunteer and Networking Opportunity

Jun 29, 2017

The Refinery Leadership Partners, is working in partnership with Teck Resources Limited, a publicly traded resource company headquartered in Vancouver. The Refinery’s role is to facilitate leadership development for front-line supervisors from mining sites across North America. These supervisors will come together in Vancouver for the final module of a 10-month leadership program. One of the module’s exercises is called “The Vancouver Dining Laboratory.”

This event, during their third module, is a capstone event for learning to lead and work more effectively in teams. The challenge requires supervisors to apply their learning to a real situation of designing and executing a dining experience for patrons. Teams are given some resources, but mostly they have to figure out what they will do and how they will do it, together. We bring local students into the mix (as a surprise) to add to the complexity of the project i.e. the team must now orient a new person/people to the team and figure out how to use their talents and expertise.

Your involvement would include developing a restaurant menu (no experience required) with a team of about 12 Teck employees in the afternoon, and delivering on that plan in the evening by cooking dinner in an iron-chef type of challenge against another team. We have incorporated Beedie students in this program for several years now, and the feedback has been very positive – a fun challenge, a learning experience and a potential networking opportunity with a great potential employer. We need four SFU students (studying anything) for each session who are keen to see teamwork and leadership in action!

We need students for multiple sessions in Vancouver. The total time commitment is from 2pm-9pm, including, of course, a free dinner.

  • MONDAY, Oct 30, 2017 at the Metropolitan Hotel, then dinner at a restaurant downtown.
  • TUESDAY, Dec 5, 2017 at the Fairmont Hotel Vancouver, then dinner at a restaurant downtown.

To sign up, please email Mel Chow at the Refinery Leadership Partners at Melanie@refineryleadership.com.  You can only sign up for 1 session, as we’d like to keep some elements a surprise. If you have any questions, please email Mel or call her at 604-899-4192 x2317.
