The Terry Fox Foundation
Terry Fox, a former SFU kinesiology student, was only 18 years old when he was diagnosed with osteogenic sarcoma (bone cancer) and forced to have his right leg amputated above the knee. Terry turned his cancer diagnosis into The Marathon of Hope to raise money for cancer research. In 1980, Terry ran a marathon a day for 143 days and inspired a nation.
Now in its 37th year the Terry Fox Run has evolved into the largest fundraising event in support of cancer research in the world, with over 9,000 Terry Fox Runs each year in 32 countries – all volunteer-led and organized.
The Terry Fox Foundation has established a leadership position within the Canadian cancer community, transforming the research landscape by stimulating the need to fund cancer research. The Terry Fox Research Institute collaborates with over 70 cancer hospitals and research organizations across Canada.
