The Beedie Endowment Asset Management (BEAM) fund, one of Canada’s largest undergraduate student-run investment funds at $6.6 million, is hiring up to 12 students for their 2018/2019 cohort. Successful applicants will be offered an entry-level analyst position in either Equities or Fixed Income.

Students accepted into BEAM will begin their involvement with the fund in March 2018. Successful applicants will complete a specially-designed three-unit business course (covering investment analysis and portfolio management) as part of their BEAM training. Special accommodation can be made for students on exchanges or internships.

We look for students with a demonstrated interest in finance who are well-rounded, driven, and wish to improve their knowledge and skill set. Prior finance work experience is not required. This is an excellent opportunity for students to gain experience in managing a portfolio for an institutional client, the Simon Fraser University Treasury and its constituents. The fund is truly unique in that while it can draw on the expertise of a faculty advisor, students make and execute all the investment decisions. Also, it is among the first student-managed funds in the world to incorporate environmental, social and governance factors into its investment decisions, consistent with SFU's commitment to sustainable investing. Many BEAM alumni are currently employed at top financial firms in cities around the world.

Admission Requirements:

  • 2nd or 3rd year Beedie student with finance concentration (to be eligible, you must be able to commit to a 2-year term in BEAM)
  • Strong academic performance
  • Desire to have a career in finance or capital markets

Analyst Responsibilities:

  • Following Canadian (and global) macroeconomic and financial market developments
  • Monitoring an assigned coverage list of companies (10 to 30 companies)
  • Conducting security analysis (including industry analysis, company analysis and valuation) and creating an ordinal rank of companies within an assigned coverage list
  • Presenting and debating ideas and investment decisions with the fund
  • Analyzing portfolio performance and executing stock and bond trades
  • Attending weekly meetings (Friday evenings), quarterly performance reviews and the annual Toronto trip
  • Time commitment: 15 hours per week
  • Length of commitment: 2 years

There will be one round of interviews scheduled for these positions. The interview will consist of a combination of technical, market, critical thinking, and behavioural questions. Only applicants meeting the above requirements will be contacted to progress to the interview stage.
