The Faculty of Business Administration at Simon Fraser University is pleased to announce the launch of its Certificate in Corporate Social Responsibility as part of the school’s Bachelor of Business Administration program.

The undergraduate certificate, which commences this September, will encourage students within SFU Business to take business courses with a focus on ethics, social responsibility, sustainable management practices and social innovation/enterprise, and combine them with a broad variety of courses and extracurricular activities outside of the business faculty related to environmental, health and cultural issues.

According to Colleen Collins, SFU Business Associate Dean & Academic Director, Undergraduate Program, one of the goals of the certificate is to acknowledge those students who have broadened their academic focus and who have made a contribution to the community through volunteer work or socially responsible activities.

“These are students who have walked the walk, and this is SFU saying that we recognize this,” she said. “The certificate says a lot about who we are as a school, and also about who our students are.”

The Certificate was originally championed by Global Agents for Change, an organization founded by SFU Business undergraduate students which mobilizes young people to explore social issues and effect change in their communities. The group advocated making socially responsible extracurricular activities a formalized part of the their program – and to build a broader perspective within a business degree around social issues.

The Faculty of Business Administration at Simon Fraser University, as a signatory to the United Nations-sanctioned Principles of Responsible Management (PRME), seeks to develop a new generation of business leaders capable of managing the complex challenges faced by business and society. The school is consistently ranked among the top programs in the country by Corporate Knights’ annual survey, which ranks schools based on corporate social responsibility, business ethics and environmental sustainability.
