JDC West 2013

SFU JDC West godparent Erica Rizzo and co-captains Amit Bhagat and Joel Thom.

The 2013 JDC West business schools showdown is six months away, but the SFU Beedie team is already hard at work to prepare for the prestigious competition.

Over the past few weeks, candidates for SFU Beedie’s JDC West academic team partook in the new case competition cohort, taught by instructor Tara Immell. The students did practice cases and presentations to develop their understanding of how to analyse cases and work as a team. The team is currently four months ahead of schedule, but co-captains Amit Bhagat and Joel Thom are convinced this new rigorous 8-week tryout structure has shown them which candidates are willing and able to commit to the team.

Squamish Nation Chief Ian Campbell, like other aboriginal leaders across B.C., sees accelerated business opportunities as key to his com-munity’s future.

To that end, the 39-year-old chief is one of several first nations leaders signing on for a new business degree pro-gram offered by Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business.

“I see this as an opportunity to develop skills in business administration,” said Campbell, who will participate in the Executive MBA in Aboriginal Business and Leadership program – the first of its type in Canada – which starts this fall.

As Canada reflects on National Aboriginal Day and a new era for Aboriginal peoples in the country, Simon Fraser University’s Beedie School of Business is moving quickly towards the September commencement of its Executive MBA in Aboriginal Business and Leadership. The program is one of many indicators that First Nations, Métis and Inuit people are entering a new era in which their communities and nations can return to prosperity.

The new EMBA, the first of its kind in the country, meets a growing need for senior-level management education for Aboriginal managers and entrepreneurs, as well as individuals and organizations collaborating with Aboriginal communities. It will provide executive-level education that reflects the growing role of business development for First Nations.

Participants will study core management concepts and principles already included in the Executive Master of Business Administration program but will also examine business and economic issues from the perspective of First Nations. Keep reading…

The total value of the new Alan and Margaret Eyre Endowment Fund is close to $600,000.

Says Reid McKenzie: “My grandfather was a great community leader and supported a number of causes, but education was most important to him. He treasured his involvement with SFU and was proud of his time working with Gordon Shrum to shape its direction in the early years. So it is only fitting that the remaining assets of the Alan and Margaret Eyre Foundation will be used to support students for generations to come.” Keep reading…

As a result of economic uncertainty and a less-than-optimal employment outlook both globally and locally, some students at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University are taking an alternative path to growing their careers. In the process, they are making hands-on contributions to the economy and society through entrepreneurial activity, community engagement, and international development.

A case in point is Education Generation, founded by Shawn Smith, a Beedie School of Business alumnus and current lecturer in innovation and entrepreneurship at the school. Education Generation is an online community, which crowd funds higher-education scholarships and directly partners with innovative educational programs globally. To date, Education Generation, which has been recognized with the 2011 United Nations affiliated World Summit Youth Award, has funded more than 300 scholarships for students in ten countries, raising over $100,000 in early funding from corporate and private donors.
