BURNABY, BC– As the world gears up for the forthcoming London Summer Games, a new Olympics tradition is also coming to SFU’s Beedie School of Business.

The Beedie Olympics is a new student engagement initiative aimed to strengthen the Beedie community – and raise money for the global sporting charity Right to Play.

The unique on-campus event will be the first of its kind to bring together faculty, alumni, and undergraduates through friendly competition. Through high-energy sports, socializing, and prizes, the Beedie Olympics will not only strengthen the connection between past and present students, but also foster social change.

As a result of economic uncertainty and a less-than-optimal employment outlook both globally and locally, some students at the Beedie School of Business at Simon Fraser University are taking an alternative path to growing their careers. In the process, they are making hands-on contributions to the economy and society through entrepreneurial activity, community engagement, and international development.

A case in point is Education Generation, founded by Shawn Smith, a Beedie School of Business alumnus and current lecturer in innovation and entrepreneurship at the school. Education Generation is an online community, which crowd funds higher-education scholarships and directly partners with innovative educational programs globally. To date, Education Generation, which has been recognized with the 2011 United Nations affiliated World Summit Youth Award, has funded more than 300 scholarships for students in ten countries, raising over $100,000 in early funding from corporate and private donors. Surrey, BC – On Tuesday, May 29th from 5:30-8pm at Eaglequest Golf Course, the Surrey Board of Trade will award 25 winners in their second annual Surrey’s Top 25 Under 25 Awards event.   The event will celebrate the incredible initiatives of Surrey’s youth under the Age of 25. The winners were chosen based upon a subjective analysis of their business or community achievements, leadership ability, community involvement, professional achievements and uniqueness of their business or community projects.

The winners include Beedie undergraduate student Joyce Loksum Mak, who is 19 years old. While studying business at SFU, Joyce holds the position of President of the SFU International Business Association, a nonprofit organization that aims to assist all SFU students interested in pursuing a career with international prospects.  Joyce is also an active member of the Guildford Rotary Club, coordinating multiple fundraisers including food bank and clothing drives.

Also recognized was BBA alumnus Julian DeSchutter, 24, who is the founder of the DeSchutter Group. After identifying that there was an opportunity to gain valuable experience as a student in the mining industry, Julian sought out opportunities that would allow him to gain the most experience, as well as set himself up for success upon graduation. Instead of becoming an employee, Julian developed his own consulting company, allowing him to grow an organization, while gaining experience in many facets of the mining industry. Julian took bold steps to win the trust of a number of CEOs, many of which are held in high regard, and was not afraid to step in and lead when needed. Since then, he has been given work-related opportunities to travel throughout the United States, Mexico, and Europe.

Mak and DeSchutter are joined on the list by 23 other young adults who have engaged business and community through volunteerism, social innovation, and business impact.

“Their community and entrepreneurial spirit were showcased through their nominations. We have amazing talent in these winners who will take our businesses now and in the future to amazing heights,” said Anita Huberman, CEO, Surrey Board of Trade (SBOT). “At the Surrey Board of Trade it is in our mandate to grow our business community by instilling in our youth entrepreneurial support and spirit – and for them to be an active part of Surrey,” said Huberman.

Beedie School of Business BusOne students at Simon Fraser University’s Surrey campus will spread some Christmas cheer for the United Way on Friday, Dec. 2.

The students, all in their first year of study, are putting their business creativity to the test to raise money, doing everything from photos with Santa to a “Rent-a-Biz-Kid” opportunity, during the special United Way event on the Mezzanine from 2:30 – 5:30 p.m.

Among other ideas, shoppers can purchase prize-popping balloons, a variety of seasonal crafts and an array of baked Christmas goods. For details, watch their video http://at.sfu.ca/pazrQv.

The BusOne program was officially offered at SFU last fall to provide a smooth transition for first-year students through a weekly workshop that introduces them to the extra-curricular opportunities that are available within the Beedie School of Business.

“The United Way challenge is a great way for the new students to tap their creativity and practice some of their business skills, all for a good cause,” says instructor Jennifer Beale.

The program’s latest crop of students will follow in the footsteps of the veteran fourth-year marketing students, who have a host of similar activities up their sleeves for the annual Market on the Mezzanine annual fundraiser the day before, on Dec. 1, 10 – 3:30 p.m.

The event will feature local community crafters, artisans and students, along with a book sale, silent auction and samosa lunch.

Last year fundraising events for the United Way at SFU campuses totaled more than $20,000, while the university community raised over $160,000.
