Career Management Workshops for Beedie Students/Alumni

Each semester, the Career Management Centre holds a series of core workshops. Throughout the year, we also hold workshops on Dining Etiquette, Work Search Strategies for International Students, and more. To find out when workshops are being held and to RSVP, visit Beedie Community.

Self Assessment & Finding Your Fit

Do you know what you want to be when you grad? Research shows that only 2% of professionals are working in the career they believed they would be in when they started university.

Whether choosing a concentration or figuring out which careers might be a fit, this workshop and the corresponding self-assessment tool, Career Leader, will help you discover your interests, skills, and motivators, and learn how to explore and gain valuable experience in those areas. Designed at Harvard and used by most  top-ranked business schools, Career Leader will also show how you match to 33 top business careers. Review industry sketches and career descriptions, gain insights into which organizational cultures may be the best match for your personality, and learn where personal career challenges may lie. This workshop will give you a better understanding of how to incorporate your interests into your career and academic planning through activities, discussion, and take-home resources.

Job Search Strategies

Learn how companies hire, where companies typically find employees, and what the search process looks like from a hiring company's perspective. Up to 75% of jobs are filled without being advertised. This workshop will discuss which resources and tools you can use to help you uncover a variety of job opportunities.

Networking & Business Etiquette

Learn strategies for making a positive and lasting impression. Develop your self-introduction and understand the basics of starting, holding, and ending a conversation. You will be coached on business etiquette, including business card and name tag protocol, how to manage food and beverage, general dining tips, and how to dress for success.

Competitive Cover Letters

It is important to include a well-written and tailored cover letter with every job application, one that complements, rather than duplicates, a resume. This workshop will teach you what information will make your cover letter stand out, what to include in each section, plus formatting tips. You will also review sample cover letters to see first-hand which styles make the best first impression.

Professional Business Resumes

Learn how to format your resume and incorporate appropriate content to present your unique experiences and accomplishments in a professional and effective manner. Get started on writing your own persuasive highlights sections and accomplishment statements and learn what extracurricular information should be included in, or left off, a resume.

Interview Preparation & Tactics

Learn what to expect in all types of interviews, discover how to develop confidence in answering standard, case, behavioural, and problem-based interview questions, and develop strategies for staying focused and being persuasive when discussing past experiences. You will have an opportunity to practice answering typical interview questions, and will receive tips on preparation, appropriate dress, asking questions, overcoming problems, and following up.
