When to apply?

STEP 1 - REVIEW APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS

  1. Either a current graduate student, post- doc, faculty member, or a recent graduate (within 3 years) of SFU or UBC graduate programs in science, engineering, health or environmental sciences.
  2. A letter of reference from your supervisor. In the case of a faculty member, a letter of reference from a colleague is fine.
  3. Resume.
  4. Official grad student transcripts.
  5. Cover Letter/ Innovation Statement. Brief description of experience in research and development and future goals.
  6. Scholarship Application (Optional). Please refer to the scholarship page and email all scholarship information to sci_comm@sfu.ca

STEP 2 - COMPLETE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

The Graduate Studies Application System must be used for your official application; however, please contact the department to discuss funding eligibility before completing the online application.

Reference letters

For your application to the program, you are required to submit a reference letter from your supervisor,  or a colleague in case of a faculty member. The online application form will have a section for you to provide information on your referee. Once you have submitted your online application, your referees will be automatically sent an email requesting them to upload their reference letter.

Note: You are not entitled to review or submit the letter on behalf of the referee, nor can you request information regarding the content or tone of a reference letter or evaluation. Guidelines for the submission of reference letters specify that referees state whether the letters will be seen by the applicant. All letters of reference received at Beedie School of Business, Graduate Programs, will be treated as confidential and will not be shared with or returned to applicants or referees.

STEP 3 - PAY APPLICATION FEE

In order to use the online application system, you will need to pay an application fee of $90 CAN (students with Canadian transcripts) or $125 CAN (students with international transcripts) by credit card (MasterCard or Visa).

  • The full application fee is due in 7 days after your application is submitted and your application will not be considered until the full payment has been received. To make an online payment, log onto your account and click on Self Service > Campus Finances > Make a Payment. If you are unable to pay the application fee by credit card, see How to Pay Your Fees for alternative payment methods.
  • If you are applying as a non-degree or exchange student, or would like to reinstate your previous program of study, please contact the department to which you intend to apply.

STEP 4 - UPLOAD & SEND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Once you have paid the application fee, you may use the online application system to upload supporting documents for review. Applications are evaluated in the order in which they are completed. It is to your advantage to upload and submit your supporting documents early to avoid application peaks.

Documents to Upload

Please upload the following supporting documents through the online application system:

  • A complete resume detailing employment, volunteer activities, education and other appropriate information.
  • A copy of your official/unofficial transcript* to expedite the evaluation process. Signed and sealed official transcripts are still required to be mailed directly to the Graduate Business program office. See below for details.
*Official transcripts for credit courses from the Registrar of each post-secondary institution you attended is required to be sent directly to the Graduate Business program office. Only one copy is required from each institution. If the transcripts are issued to you, they must be signed and sealed by the post-secondary institution.

STEP 5 - UPON ACCEPTANCE TO THE PROGRAM

Within 21 days of receiving your acceptance letter, a non-refundable deposit of $250 CDN must be submitted. This deposit reserves your seat in the Graduate Certificate in Science & Technology Commercialization program and will be applied towards your tuition.
