This speaker series is designed to take the unique and innovative approaches to emerging trends in technology and development to the next level by bringing in some of B.C.’s most innovative, sustainable entrepreneurs to share their experiences and show that profit and improving the community and environment are not mutually exclusive.

Sustainability Meets Entrepreneurship, Web 2.0 and Mobile Applications

Dr. Boyd Cohen

Dr. Boyd Cohen is as an assistant professor charged with developing a new technology entrepreneurship program for SFU Surrey's undergraduate business program. He is also affiliated with SFU's Centre for Sustainable Community Development.

Boyd's research focuses on how entrepreneurs can contribute to an environmentally sustainable world. A LEED-accredited professional (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design), Boyd consulted to Canada's first LEED neighbourhood greenfield project in Langford on Vancouver Island. He is also an entrepreneur who has founded and co-founded several sustainability companies including Recollective Consulting, Visible Strategies and most recently 3rdwhale.com.  As founder of 3rdwhale.com, Boyd launched the Greenest Person on the Planet competition and is currently launching a location-based service from 3rdwhale for the iPhone which will be called Luna.

Transforming the Development Sector Towards Sustainability: A Surrey Perspective


Mark Allison

Mark Allison is a community and regional planner who is currently a Senior Policy Planner with the City of Surrey, heading up planning for sustainability and the City Centre. Before Surrey, Mark was the Transportation Planner for the City of New Westminster, the Regional Growth Strategy Coordinator for the Fraser Valley Regional District and a sustainability planning consultant after finishing his masters degree in urban planning at UBC. Long an advocate of Smart Growth, Sustainable Development and Transit Oriented Development, Mark is an active board member with Smart Growth BC and the Community Energy Association.

Robert Dominick

Robert Dominick is Vice President of Sales and Acquisitions for WestStone Properties Ltd. His expansive real estate sales, marketing and business background, coupled with a visionary understanding of the real estate marketplace, has helped him move forward through many spheres of change in the real estate development industry and become a firm advocate in sustainable building practices. One of his current projects is WestStone’s $1 billion Urban Village development that sits just west of the SFU Surrey campus. He has taken this master planned community development from its initial land assembly through to the near completion of its first two phases all the while introducing sustainable elements at each stage. Robert currently serves as Vice-President of the Downtown Surrey Business Improvement Association and is Chairman of the Public Space and Land Use Committee.

Sustainable Entrepreneurship in the Information Age

Chris Godsall  
Chris Godsall is the CEO of Triton Logging Inc. He leads a team that has spent the last nine years growing the company from a concept into the world’s leading integrated underwater forestry company. Triton designs, builds and operates patented underwater logging technology currently operating on hydro reservoirs in Asia and British Columbia. The company has won numerous awards and has attracted worldwide media attention for its innovative technology and business model. Chris has a B.A. from McGill University and an M.Sc. in Responsibility and Business Practice from the University of Bath (UK). He is also the founder and former Executive Director of Montreal-based NGO Santropol Roulant, which the Globe and Mail described as One of the Ten Best Places to Put Your Money.
