When to apply?

Applications are received and considered on a rolling basis. We consider applications in the order in which we receive them, which means you can apply between deadlines. Fall 2017 Application Deadlines:

Our application deadlines have passed but our application is still open and we are considering applications on a case by case basis. Please contact motmba@sfu.ca if you would like to apply or have any questions.

STEP 1: REVIEW APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS BELOW

A) Undergraduate Degree

  • An undergraduate degree with a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.0/4.33 (B) or a grade point average of at least 3.33/4.33 (B+) based on the last 60 credits of undergraduate courses.
  • All graduate work is also considered.
  • A small number of applicants with extensive work experience may be considered without an undergraduate degree. Each applicant under this category will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis.
  • Please note: If your transcripts are not in English and no translation is provided by the University, please download the International Transcript requirements.
  • Need to upgrade your qualifications? Consider the Graduate Diploma in Business Administration.

B) GMAT

  • Applicants can have the GMAT portion of the application waived if they have the right combination of work experience and academic qualifications. If you would like to request a GMAT waiver, please contact us and provide an up-to-date copy of your resume, listing all experience, academic qualifications and professional designations.
  • Applicants who apply with a GMAT score must achieve a minimum score of 550 including a minimum of 5.0 on the AWA section.
  • No GMAT is required for graduates of SFU's GDBA program who receive a 3.5 or better CGPA.
  • Applicants who take their GMAT test after submitting their application should arrange to email (motmba@sfu.ca) or fax (778.782.5153) their unofficial GMAT scores to ensure there is no delay in the application process. It takes up to 20 business days for official scores to arrive at SFU. The GMAT may be taken as often as desired, and SFU will only consider the highest score. The GMAT score is valid for five years from the exam date.
  • Applicants must instruct GMAT to send the original score report directly to the MBA Office, code 6G8-N3-81.

C) Work Experience

  • Applicants should have a minimum of four years of professional work experience, preferably in the technology or biotechnology sector.
  • We take a holistic approach in accepting students for our program.
  • We take into consideration your work and life experiences in addition to your grades and test scores.
  • Please note that the MOT MBA Program is unable to consider applicants who are not currently working or have not been offered a job in Vancouver or the surrounding area.

D) Language Proficiency

  • All courses in the MOT MBA program are taught in English, therefore all applicants must be fluent in English.
  • If your primary language is not English or your previous education has been conducted in a country where English is not the primary language (a full list of accepted countries can be found here), you must demonstrate sufficient command of the English language as evidenced by achieving a satisfactory score on a standardized English test acceptable to the University.   • The two tests we accept are:
    • Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) including reading, writing, speaking, and listening components
    • International English Language Testing Systems (IELTS)
  • The minimum University requirements for test scores is:
    • TOEFL 93 with a minimum of 20 in each category (internet based exam) and a TWE of 5 (the paper based TOEFL score is also accepted with a minimum score of 580)
    • IELTS overall band score of 7.0

E) Status in Canada

  • If you are not a Canadian citizen or do not have landed immigrant status, you must have a valid Canadian student visa.

  • Please note that the MOT MBA Program is unable to consider applicants who are not currently working or have not been offered a job in Vancouver or the surrounding area.

STEP 2: COMPLETE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

  • The Graduate Studies Application System must be used for your official application.
  • Upon submission, you will have seven days to pay your application fee in full.
  • If you do not pay your application fee within the allotted time, your application will be cancelled.
  • Once you have paid your application fee, you may begin to upload required documents.
  • Your application will remain open until the cohort intake is closed.

Reference letters

  • You are required to submit three reference letters.
  • The online application form will have a section for you to provide information on your three referees.
  • Once you have submitted your online application, your referees will be automatically sent an email requesting them to upload their reference letter.
  • Once the reference letter has been submitted, your online checklist will be updated.
  • Download the Appraiser's form.
  • You are not entitled to review or submit the letter on behalf of the referee, nor can you request information regarding the content or tone of a reference letter or evaluation.
  • Guidelines for the submission of reference letters specify that referees state whether or not the applicant will see the letters.
  • All letters of reference received at Beedie School of Business, Graduate Programs will be treated as confidential and will not be shared with or returned to applicants or referees.

STEP 3: PAY APPLICATION FEE

  • In order to use the online application system, you will need to pay an application fee of $90 CAN (students with Canadian transcripts) or $125 CAN (students with international transcripts) by credit card (MasterCard or Visa).
  • If you do not pay the application fee within one week of application completion, your application will be cancelled.
  • To pay the application fee, log in to the Graduate Studies Application System with your User ID and password and select 'Make a Payment' from the Application Services page.

STEP 4: UPLOAD & SEND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

  • Once you have paid the application fee, you may use the online application system to upload supporting documents for review.
  • Applications are evaluated in the order in which they are completed.
  • It is to your advantage to upload and submit your supporting documents early to avoid application peaks.

Please upload the following supporting documents through the online application system:
  • Resume: A complete resume showing employment, volunteer activities, education and other appropriate information.
  • Transcripts: A copy of your official/unofficial transcript to expedite the evaluation process. Signed and sealed official transcripts are still required to be mailed directly to the Graduate Business program office. See below for details. Please note: If your transcripts are not in English and no translation is provided by the university, please click here for more information.
  • GMAT Score Report: A copy of the GMAT Score Report to expedite the evaluation process. Please make sure the Educational Testing Service is informed to forward your official score to our office at code 6G8-N3-47.
  • Self Evaluation: A completed self-evaluation in PDF format. Download the Self Evaluation document.
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE Score Report (if applicable): For those students whose first language is not English and whose undergraduate degrees have not been obtained from a country where English is the primary language of instruction (a full list of accepted countries can be found here), please upload of a copy of the score report in PDF format. Please make sure the Educational Testing Service is informed to forward your official score to our office. ETS Code for TOEFL: Department code 01; Institution code 0999.

Documents to be delivered:

In addition, please deliver the following supporting document(s) to the Graduate Business Program office at the following address: MBA Program, Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University, 3rd Floor, 500 Granville Street, Vancouver, BC V6C 1W6.
  • Official Transcripts: Official transcripts for credit courses from the Registrar of each post-secondary institution you attended must be sent directly to the Graduate Business program office. Only one copy is required from each institution. If the transcripts are issued to you, they must be signed and sealed by your post-secondary institution.
  • GMAT Score Report: Please inform the Educational Testing Service to forward your official score report to our office at Code 6G8-N3-47.
  • TOEFL, IELTS or PTE (if applicable): Please inform the Educational Testing Service to forward your official score report to our office. Code for TOEFL results: Department code 01; Institution code 0999.

STEP 5: UPON ACCEPTANCE TO THE PROGRAM

  • Within 21 days of receiving your acceptance letter, a non-refundable deposit of $2,000 CDN must be submitted.
  • This deposit reserves your seat in the MOT MBA program, and will be applied towards your tuition.
  • Please make the cheque or bank draft payable to Simon Fraser University and send to the Graduate Business program office, once you have received a letter of acceptance.
