A group of Beedie School of Business undergraduates have been putting their newfound project management skills to good use by staging a charity fundraising music concert in aid of BC Children’s Hospital.

The event, BC Music for BC Kids, will be held on November 17 from 6 – 8.30pm at the Westminster Savings Theatre at SFU’s Surrey campus. It will feature a selection of local music acts from the lower mainland including Tommy Alto, The Oh Wells, and Coastline Pilot, with all proceeds benefiting the BC Children’s Hospital Foundation’s Miracle Weekend.

The event is the brainchild of BBA students Nick Sigouin, Jack Liu, Sumayah Misbah, Timur Shuvaloff and Mark Liangco. The group, calling themselves Team Diverse, was required to design, manage, and execute a successful project as part of their BUS 361 Project Management class, and decided to use the opportunity to raise money for a worthwhile cause.

“We wanted to stage an event which would be of benefit to local communities and chose to focus on raising awareness of the work BC Children’s Hospital does in treating the province’s sickest children,” says Sigouin. “Many of our team have seen firsthand the quality of research and care provided by BC Children’s Hospital, along with the impact it can have on young members of BC and Canada as a whole, and we decided we would try to give something back.”

Throughout the project the group have experienced the difficulties of event planning, being forced to deal with the stresses of unforeseen circumstances, hidden costs and acts being unable to fulfill commitments at short notice.

“Planning BC Music for BC Kids has required us to apply many of the skills we have learned in our project management class, forcing us to cultivate external relationships, work extemporaneously and function as a tight-knit team,” says Sigouin. “Thanks to the support of the Beedie School of Business, and in particular our lecturer, Kamal Masri, we are confident we have put together an event which will be a success for everyone.”
