Managerial Economics aims to give an understanding of how economic concepts can help with tactical and strategic decision-making. This course emphasizes the practical application of economic ideas to help you become a better manager.
Managing People

Focusing on organizational behaviour and human resources management, you develop an understanding of how organizations can build an engaged, committed, motivated and productive workforce.
Finance
JAN SIMON, PhD
This course provides an understanding of how financial management works. The course discusses issues such as financial analysis, diagnosis of short-term funding needs, financial structure, cost of capital and valuation.
Accounting
CRAIG EMBY, PhD
An analysis of financial statements and their role in organizational life. You'll also learn concepts and principles in financial accounting and how to use accounting information for managerial decisions.
Simulation
This course provides a truly unique experience. An intensive 2.5 day behavioural simulation, you will be divided into groups and assume leadership positions. This simulation provides an integrated experience to conclude the semester.

You’ll learn the fundamentals of marketing through product planning, channel selection,price and promotion. You’ll have the opportunity to work through simulations and develop an understanding of what creates successful products and campaigns.

Inter-Semester Spring/Summer
International Field Study Trip (Optional)
Discover the role your new skills play in business and the world. The international field study trip exposes you to the cultural differences and challenges of working in an era when businesses span borders. Past locations have included China, Japan and Chile. The trip includes site visits, lectures, cultural events and meetings with senior business leaders across a variety of industries.

Dr. Abramson’s research and specialization interests include strategies for international business; cross-cultural management and decision making; doing business in China, Southeast Asia and the US; and international organizational theory.
STEPHANIE BERTELS, PhD (Calgary)
Associate Professor, Sustainability
Stephanie Bertels joined SFU Business in 2008 from the Erb Institute for Global Sustainable Enterprise at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor where she spent two years on a post-doctoral fellowship from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council (SSHRC). She holds a PhD in strategy and global management and sustainable development. Prior to earning her PhD, Stephanie worked in industry as an environmental engineer.
ED BUKSZAR, PhD (Arizona)
Associate Dean, Segal Graduate School of Business; Associate Professor, Strategy
In addition to teaching and holding a variety of academic administrative positions at the Beedie School of Business, Dr. Bukszar has taught in MBA programs in Europe and Asia. He has twice been awarded a TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award. His research examines how executives make decisions and how those decisions inform their strategies.

Dr. Bushe is an internationally recognized scholar in organizational development. His research examines organizational change and learning, leadership development, teams and team building. He is an active consultant to business and contributes to editorial boards in his field.
CAROLYN P. EGRI, PhD (British Columbia)
Professor, Management and Organization Studies
Dr. Egri is a pioneer in research related to corporate environmental and social responsibility. A TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award recipient, she is a prolific researcher with numerous research grants. She examines corporate environmental social responsibility practices and cross-cultural differences in managerial values and influence tactics around the world.
CRAIG EMBY, PhD (Alberta)
Professor, Accounting
Professor Emby's research interests focus on audit judgment and audit decision making, and he has authored or co-authored articles in numerous accounting and auditing journals. He teaches Financial and Managerial Accounting.
MILA LAZAROVA, PhD
Dr. Mila Lazarova joined the Beedie School of Business in 2002 from Rutgers, the State University of New Jersey, where she received her PhD. Her research interests include expatriate management, with a focus on repatriation and the career impact of international assignments; work/life balance issues related to assignments; global careers and the role of organizational career development and mobility practices in organizations; the changing role of the HR department; and comparative human resource management.

Mr. David Gibbons is a senior consultant with Refinery Leadership Partners. An expert in strategic decision making, he has led corporate leadership programs for an impressive list of businesses. A dedicated educator, he continues to teach at SFU’s Faculty of Business Administration. Formerly he was the executive director of the Learning Strategies Group at Beedie School of Business.

Adjunct Professor, Entrepreneurship
Mr. Hand is president of Northwest Strategies, a private consulting and investment firm focused on the IT, media, communications, healthcare and industrial sectors. He has extensive experience in venture capital, business planning, development and corporate finance.
DAVID HANNAH, PhD (Texas)
Assistant Professor, Management and Organization Studies
Dr. Hannah’s research focuses on employee behaviour and leadership that goes against organizational rules and policies. He has published in numerous books and journals and was the recipient of the 2005 TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Hannah teaches Negotiation in the MBA program.
BRENDA LAUTSCH, PhD (MIT)
Assistant Professor, Management and Organization Studies
Dr. Lautsch's research focuses on the human aspects of work, employment relationships, alternative dispute resolution and the effects of flexible work arrangements. In 2008, she co-authored the book CEO of Me, and has published in Industrial Relations and Human Relations journals. Dr. Lautsch has received teaching and research honour roll acknowledgement for her work.
IAN P. MCCARTHY, PhD (Sheffield)
Associate Professor, Technology and Operations Management
Dr. McCarthy is the Canada Research Chair in Management of Technology at SFU. His work considers technology and operations management issues such as managing operational complexity, mass customization, modeling decision-making in new product development, and classifying drug discovery strategies. He teaches Operations Management.
MARK MOORE, PhD (Columbia)
Senior Lecturer, Strategy
Dr. Moore's has conducted research on monetary policy, international portfolios, direct investment flows and options pricing methods for the Bank of Canada. His current research is on further analysis of the softwood lumber dispute, and he is also investigating the consequences of privatizing the Canadian National Railway.
MICHAEL PARENT, PhD (Queen's)
Associate Professor, Management Information Systems
Dr. Parent comes to academia from more than 10 years in the high technology industry. An award-winning teacher, he has also received several grant awards including a three-year SSHRC “Initiative on the New Economy” grant to examine the process firms use to make decisions about adopting technology infrastructure.
LEYLAND PITT, PhD (Pretoria)
Professor, Marketing
Dr. Pitt is an internationally renowned marketing expert, recipient of the TD Canada Trust Distinguished Teaching Award. He has taught on five continents and has published extensively in peer-reviewed journals. In 2002, the Academy of Marketing Science, the world's largest academic marketing association, named him "Outstanding Marketing Teacher." His research focuses on the marketing-technology interface, and the interaction between marketing and information systems.
DAVID C. THOMAS, PhD (South Carolina)
Professor, International Management
Dr. Thomas serves as Academic Director of the PhD Program. He is the author of numerous books and journal articles on cross-cultural interactions in organizational settings. He is currently the Associate Editor of the Journal of Cross-Cultural Management and serves on the editorial boards of the Journal of World Business, and the Journal of Management.
MARK N. WEXLER, PhD (York)
Professor, Business Ethics, Management and Organization Studies, and Strategy
Dr. Wexler is President of the Perimeter Group of Consultants and Trainers. His work appears in over 110 refereed journals and he is the author of eight books. He has been awarded eight teaching awards, numerous grants and research funds and was PricewaterhouseCooper’s 2004 “Leader in Management Education.”
JAN SIMON, PhD (Essex)
Visiting Professor
An Associate Professor at IESE and a visiting Professor at SFU Beedie, Dr. Simon received his PhD in Finance from the University of Essex. He also completed his MBA at the IESE Business School from the University of Navarra and his Master of Law from Katholieke Universiteit Leuven.
DAVID DUNNE, PhD (Toronto)
Adjunct Professor
Dr. Dunne is an award-winning management educator, author and consultant. He is interested in the design of customer experience, in health care and other fields. Integrating international business experience in marketing and advertising with an outstanding records as an academic, he teaches creative problem solving, design and marketing throughout the world. He serves on the boards of NGO's that foster higher education in the poorest countries.
