How to Apply


Applications are now being accepted for the September 2012 start date. You are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as applications will be reviewed/admitted on an ongoing basis. International applicants should apply no later than April 1, 2012 to allow for study permit processing time.

1st application deadline: February 15, 2012
2nd application deadline: April 1, 2012
3rd application deadline: July 1, 2012

Applications received after the July 1, 2012 deadline will only be considered/accepted on a space available basis. International applicants: please be aware that if you apply after April 1st, you may not get your study permit in time for this September start.

  • In order to use the online application system, you will need to pay an application fee of $90 CAN (students with Canadian transcripts) or $125 CAN (students with international transcripts) by credit card (MasterCard or Visa).
  • An application that is not submitted within 28 days or by the application deadline - whichever comes first - will be cancelled.
  • The full application fee is due in 7 days after your application is submitted and your application will not be considered until the full payment has been received.  To make an online payment, log onto your account and click on Self Service > Campus Finances > Make a Payment.  If you are unable to pay the application fee by credit card, see How to Pay Your Fees for alternative payment methods.
  • If you are applying as a non-degree or exchange student, or would like to reinstate your previous program of study, please contact the department to which you intend to apply.

STEP 1 - REVIEW APPLICATION REQUIREMENTS BELOW

A)  Undergraduate Degree 
  • Applicants must have an undergraduate degree with a minimum cumulative grade point average (CGPA) of 3.0 (B average)

B)  GMAT
  • Applicants must achieve a minimum score of 550 on the GMAT including a minimum of 5.0 on the AWA section. No GMAT is required for graduates of SFU's GDBA program who receive a 3.5 or better CGPA.
  • Applicants who take their GMAT test after submitting their application should arrange to email (motmba@sfu.ca) or fax (778.782.5153) their unofficial GMAT scores to ensure there is no delay in the application process as it takes up to 20 business days for official scores to arrive at SFU. The GMAT may be taken as often as desired, and SFU will only consider the highest score. The GMAT score is valid for five years from the exam date.
  • Applicants must instruct GMAT to send the original score report directly to the MBA Office, code 6G8-N3-81.

C)  Work Experience

Applicants should have a minimum of four years of professional work experience, preferably in the technology or biotechnology sector. We take a holistic approach in accepting students for our program. We take into consideration your work and life experiences in addition to your grades and test scores.

D)  Language Proficiency

All courses in the MOT MBA program are taught in English, therefore all applicants must be fluent in English. If the applicant's previous degree was not taught in English, he or she must take the TOEFL or the IELTS.
Applicants must instruct TOEFL to send the original score report directly to the MBA Office (code 0999).

Please note the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is administered each month at Simon Fraser University's downtown Harbour Centre campus at 515 West Hastings Street, Vancouver.

E)  Status in Canada

STEP 2 - COMPLETE ONLINE APPLICATION FORM

The Graduate Studies Application System must be used for your official application. Your application remains open for one week while you complete it.

STEP 4 - SEND SUPPORTING DOCUMENTS

Please deliver ALL supporting documents with your name and application number (which you also use as your login for the online application) to the Graduate Business Program office at the following address:

B)  Official transcripts for credit courses from the Registrar of each post-secondary institution you attended is required to be sent directly to the Graduate Business program office. Only one copy is required from each institution. If the transcripts are issued to you, they must be signed and sealed by your post-secondary institution. We can accept photocopies of your transcripts if originals are not immediately available at this time; however originals must be sent prior to official acceptance.

C)  Letters of Reference: Submit three confidential letters of reference from supervisors, instructors, or significant clients. If possible, please include one academic reference. Please give each referee a copy of the "Guide for Appraisers of Applicants" (CLICK HERE), which provides information on what the admissions committee finds useful in its evaluation. All letters must be submitted by the referring person directly to the Graduate Business program office in sealed envelopes. Emails are not accepted.

D)  Resume: Please submit a complete resume showing employment, volunteer activities, education, and other appropriate information.

E)  Organizational chart with your position indicated on it, if available.

F)  TOEFL or IELTS for those students whose first language is not English and whose undergraduate degrees have not been obtained at an institution where English is the language of instruction. (ETS CODE for TOEFL results: MBA Office, 0999)

STEP 5 - CHECK APPLICATION STATUS

To check the status of your application, simply login at https://go.sfu.ca/goprd/gradapplication.html with your User ID and password and select "View Application Status" from the Application Services page.

STEP 6 - UPON ACCEPTANCE TO THE PROGRAM

Within 20 business days of receiving your acceptance letter, a non-refundable deposit of $1000 CDN must be submitted. This deposit reserves your seat in the MOT MBA program, and will be applied towards your tuition. Please make the cheque or bank draft payable to Simon Fraser University and send to the Graduate Business program office, once you have received a letter of acceptance.
