Stephanie Bertels Named as Co-investigator on Regulatory Compliance Study

Apr 16, 2009

SFU Business assistant professor Stephanie Bertels has been named as a co-investigator in an 18-month study on regulatory compliance. As part of an experiment in creative sentencing, Suncor is funding an investigation into the antecedents of regulatory compliance and the creative sentencing process. The research study will housed at the International Resource Industries and Sustainability Centre (IRIS) at the University of Calgary and directed by Prof. Frances Bowen.

This creative sentencing project is a set of research, teaching and outreach activities designed to develop organizational learning from an environmental violation that occurred at Suncor’s Firebag facility. The project will be conducted by researchers who have expertise in the organizational dimensions of environmental management at resource companies.

The project researchers will conduct new studies at Suncor to understand the formal and informal aspects of a culture of compliance with environmental regulations. From this information, researchers will then develop best practices for ensuring future environmental compliance, and widely communicate their findings to the public through teaching cases, public seminars, executive briefings, knowledge forum, reporting and recommendations for industry
