Curriculum Vitae for Dr. McCarthy

Biography

Dr. Ian McCarthy came to SFU from the University of Warwick, England where he was a Reader and Head of the Organizational Systems Strategy Unit. He worked for several years as a manufacturing engineer before earning his PhD in operations strategy from the University of Sheffield.

As the Canada Research Chair in Management of Technology and Operations Management in the Beedie School of Business at SFU, Ian's research focuses on the design and operational performance of technology-based organizations. He is particularly interested in operational complexity, customization, organizational networks and new product development. He is a specialist in taxonomy and uses evolutionary classification methods to map the operational and technology strategies in industries. He is also head of the new SFU Business Centre for Research in Biotechnology Management.

Ian enjoys Vancouver's ski hills and cycling opportunities. He also likes to monitor the progress of the biggest and best football club in England - Everton F.C.
