Morenike Akinyemi

FT MBA

Provincial Health Services Authority

Senior Project Manager, Transformation Delivery

“I always saw myself working beyond clinical pharmacy. I felt that I could also shine on the business side of healthcare. I knew that with my strong clinical training an MBA would help open more doors and give me the mobility I was looking for in my career.”

Morenike left her family and career back in Nigeria to earn her MBA and fulfill her goals.

My experience at SFU Beedie

The MBA program equipped me with a greater perspective for analyzing and tackling the issues that are faced in the healthcare industry. I developed valuable business skills that really helped compliment my strong clinical training. Through the program, I made valuable industry connections as well as long-lasting friendships with students from my cohort.

My Journey

Before starting the MBA program at SFU Beedie, I worked for two years as a clinical pharmacist for various Nigerian hospitals and pharmacies. It’s where I developed an interest in business strategy and the urge to one day start my own business.

Deciding to leave home for the first time in my life to pursue an MBA wasn’t an easy one because that meant I would be leaving my close friends and family, but I knew that this would help give the mobility I was looking for in my career.

Looking back, it’s a decision that I would gladly make again. The campus is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, where there’s a lot different places to check out between classes. I really enjoyed the small classes because I was able to really bond with my classmates and professors. I gained hands-on experience working as a business analyst in a co-op with WorkSafeBC.

After the program, my career really took off. I was hired as a management consultant in Deloitte’s healthcare transformation team before moving to the Provincial Health Services Authority, where I recently earned a promotion to senior project manager.

Highlights

The most memorable experience for me was the international trip we took to Brazil. Outside of the learnings on that trip, I built memories that I will cherish forever with my MBA cohort and the professors.

Where I am today

I now serve as senior project manager with the Transformation Leadership Office at Provincial Health Services Authority, where I develop integrated business strategies to support healthcare transformation across the province.
