Jonny Van Dyck

MOT MBA

Technology Brewing Corporation

Operations Manager

“I believed this would give me the confidence to take on more senior positions. I also liked that the MOT had a technology focus.”

Looking to advance his career and broaden his skillset beyond engineering, Jonny set out to pursue the Management of Technology (MOT) MBA.

My experience at SFU Beedie

The MBA developed me into a more strategic thinker. I learned how to approach problems in a new way; analyzing them through both a broad and narrow lens, working through frameworks, and identifying several different options before making a recommendation.

Before the MOT program, I didn’t know how to read financial statements, review marketing plans, or formulate a strategy. Through the program, I learned all that and more. I now feel more confident stepping into senior positions, knowing that I have the business skills and the ability to communicate cross-functionally with different teams.

My Journey

I began my engineering career at TRIUMF (UBC), Canada’s national particle accelerator lab, and later moved to Advanced Cyclotron Systems Inc. (ACSI). My desire to pursue more significant leadership roles eventually led me to SFU Beedie's MOT MBA program.

I decided to pursue the MOT MBA not only for career advancement, but also for professional development. I wanted to broaden my skillset beyond engineering and understand the business elements involved in managing technology.

Shortly after graduating from SFU Beedie, I secured a new role as Operations Manager at ACSI.

Highlights

One of the most enriching elements of my SFU Beedie experience was learning to be a more effective leader & team member.

I learned about the importance of active listening, humility, and strengths-based leadership. As leaders, we don’t know it all, and that’s OK. We need to be humble enough to ask. A good leader recognizes their weaknesses and complements them with team members’ strengths.

Where I am today

I now serve as Operations Manager at ACSI, where I utilize my MBA leadership skills every day.
