Tim Dinger

MSc Fin

BMO Capital Markets

Investment Banking Analyst

“SFU Beedie’s great reputation in the business and finance community opens doors. It is up to each graduate to capitalize on that, and SFU Beedie gave me the opportunity and tools to prepare myself for a rewarding career.”

It was while visiting Victoria as part of a study program that Tim Dinger of Frankfurt, Germany, decided to move to Canada. Already working for DZ Bank and attending the Frankfurt School of Finance and Management in Germany, he believed the best way to get a foothold in the Canadian banking sector was through the SFU Beedie School of Business Master of Science in Finance (MSc Finance) program.

My experience at SFU Beedie

“I knew I would need a better understanding of the financial sector in Canada to land a job here. SFU Beedie provided a solid foundation in understanding finance theory, financial instruments, and financial markets, as well as hands-on investment experience.”

My Journey

“Having spent four years with DZ Bank, I already had a good understanding of how banking works. I wanted to pursue investment banking in Canada and looked at different schools here to achieve that. The Master of Science in Finance program at SFU Beedie not only offered the best value for money, but it also offered other ‘value-adds’ that other schools didn’t.”

Highlights

Like many students in the Master of Science in Finance program, Tim gained real experience through the Student Investment Advisory Service (SIAS) Fund, which manages more than $18 million of SFU’s endowment fund (as of January 1, 2018).

“With SIAS, you get to invest real money on behalf of Simon Fraser University, and that is different than learning in a classroom setting. It requires in-depth analysis of companies and investment opportunities, and risk analysis. That real-world investment experience alone has been very valuable for me.”

Where I am today

Tim is now an Investment Banking Analyst with BMO Capital Markets in Vancouver, where he is responsible for advising clients, primarily in the mining sector, in a variety of areas such as capital market strategies, mergers and acquisitions, and raising capital.
