Listed below are award opportunities that are available to Beedie Students.

To put your name forward to be considered for departmental nomination please follow the guidelines listed below:

All applications are to be submitted to ugclerk@sfu.ca by 11:59pm on Sunday September 8, 2019.

Applications require these 3 items to be submitted as one single merged pdf file, titled
“yourfullname.studentnumber.nameofscholarshiporaward.pdf”:

  1. Letter of intent (not to exceed 2 pages)
  2. Resume
  3. Any additional reference or recommendation letters or other supporting materials that are either requested by the terms of reference or that you choose to include as further support for your application. Letters are optional where they are not requested by the terms of reference, but can be helpful.

Only one application package per email. (Multiple emails are perfectly acceptable in this situation.) Please state the name of the award you are applying for in each email heading. Please also include your student number in the body of the email.

All Awards Require (unless otherwise stated):

  • A minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 at SFU and must not be on academic probation. In the case the student is a first term or transfer student he/she must possess and equivalent secondary school or college standing.
  • Registration in a minimum of 9 units of standard graded courses in the term of eligibility (Fall 2019).

1. Robert O. Sanderson Award in Business
Value $6,000.00

To a first Year Business (less than 45 in-progress units) student who has demonstrated a history of volunteer community service.

Terms of Reference

  • Preference to students who have entered SFU from School District #79 (Duncan, Cowichan Lake).
  • Secondary preference is to students from Vancouver Island.

2. Empresario Entrepreneur Award
Value $5,600.00

Students must have participated successfully in one of the Beedie School of Business’ key entrepreneurship programs such as Change Lab, the SFU Venture Accelerator, or Opportunity Fest.

Terms of Reference

  • CV required outlining their history of entrepreneurship training and ventures.
  • Reference Letter (RL) from a faculty member who can attest to the same.
  • Preference to students who have a declared concentration in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

3. CN Indigenous Award
Value $5,000.00

To an Indigenous Business student who has demonstrated excellence in one or more of the following: community service and/or cultural contributions to the University, Indigenous and/or general community.

Terms of Reference

  • Students must include a resume outlining the details of their community service and/or cultural contributions, a one-page cover letter that responds to the following question: “How has/will your service and/or cultural contributions demonstrate a positive impact to the University, Indigenous, and/or general community?”
  • One or more letter(s) of reference from a community member who can verify the applicant’s involvement and/or contribution and speak to the positive impact of the applicant’s role.

4. Beedie Business Award
Value $3,000.00

To a Business student who is in good academic standing and is a Canadian citizen or Permanent resident of Canada.

Terms of Reference

  • Applicants must demonstrate exceptional community/volunteer service.
  • Preference will be given to applicants who are registered in a study abroad exchange.
  • Preference will also be given to applicants who have completed an international co-op work placement in one of the previous two terms.
  • Provide a CV to demonstrate community service involvement.
  • A letter of reference from someone who can attest to the student’s service in the community.

5. Barry Macdonald Award in Accounting
Value $2,600.00

Student with a declared concentration in Accounting and completed at least 60 SFU units and demonstrated exceptional community service.

Terms of Reference

  • Student must include a statement from the applicant describing their exceptional community service
  • A letter of reference from an individual who can verify their service.
  • Student completed at least 60 SFU units.

6. Barry Macdonald Award for Global Mobility
Value $2,500.00

Student completed at least 60 SFU units and have been accepted or are currently enrolled in an SFU international exchange program administered by the ISS office in the term of eligibility; and demonstrated community service.

Terms of Reference

  • Preference to students who are enrolled in their exchange term(s) in Asia.
  • Applications must include a statement and a letter of reference.

7. Scotiabank Student Awards in Social Innovation
Value $2,150.00

To Business Students who have demonstrated commitment to and achievement in social innovation.

Terms of Reference

  • Students must include a statement from the applicant describing their commitment to and achievement in social innovation.
  • A letter of reference from an individual who can verify the student’s commitment to and achievement in social innovation.
  • Recommendations will be forwarded by the Director, RADIUS SFU to the Associate Dean.

8. Zabeen Hirji Award in Human Resource Management and Diversity
Value $2,000.00

To a Business student who has a concentration in Human Resource Management and has demonstrated commitment to diversity either in the community, workplace or on campus.

Terms of Reference

  • Student must include a statement outlining the student’s involvement in promoting or furthering diversity either in the community, workplace or on campus.
  • A letter of reference from a faculty member or supervisor confirming the student’s involvement and impact.

9. Zabeen Hirji Commitment to Diversity Award
Value $2,000.00

To a Business student who has demonstrated commitment to diversity either in the community, workplace or on campus.

Terms of Reference

  • Student must include their involvement in promoting or furthering diversity either in the community, workplace or on campus.
  • A letter of reference from a faculty member or supervisor confirming the student’s involvement and impact.
  • Students who have demonstrated a serious interest in the business issues and financial need may be taken into consideration.

10. CPABC Surrey/ Langley/ North Delta Chapter Award In Accounting
Value $1,500.00

Student who are entering, or are currently enrolled in, their fourth year (60+ units) of study, has a declared concentration in Accounting and has participated in CPA recruitment activities.

Terms of Reference

  • Applicants must be a resident of Surrey, Langley or North Delta.
  • Provide evidence of participation in CPA recruitment activities;
  • Include a statement of interest in pursuing the CPA designation at the CPA Western School of Business.
  • The recipient cannot hold more than one CPABC funded SFU award during any one term.

11. William K. McCourt and TEC Canada Awards in Business
Value $1,400.00

Students who have demonstrated a serious interest in the business issues and finan­cial need may be taken into consideration.

Terms of Reference

  • By the end of September each year, the Undergraduate Program in the Beedie School of Business will identify the business issue for the essay.
  • The essay can be a maximum of 10 pages, double spaced.
  • The application and essay must be received by the Executive Director of the Undergraduate Program by January 31 of the subsequent term.
  • Awards will be disbursed annually in the Spring term.

12. Stanley J. Shapiro Student Service Award
Value $1,200.00

To a Business student who is in good academic standing and has demonstrated out­standing service in the university community through membership in a student club within the Beedie School of Business in at least two of the three terms prior to their award application.

Terms of Reference

  • Applications must include a summary of the applicant’s university involvement.
  • A letter of reference from an SFU faculty or staff member who can verify the university involvement, club membership, and impact of the applicant’s role.

13. Schiller Family Award in Business
Value $1,000.00

Student completed at least 60 SFU units and who have been employed full-time in the hospitality industry for at least one year before entering or returning to universi­ty.

Terms of Reference

  • Students should include a letter detailing their employment history prior to entering or returning to university studies.
  • A letter of reference verifying this experience.

14. Ben West Student Exchange Annual Award
Value $1,000.00

To Business students who are in their 3rd or 4th year of study and enrolled to par­ticipate in a term exchange. The award will be granted on the basis of outstanding community service.

Terms of Reference

  • Supporting documents should include cover letter, reference letter and résumé.
  • Where possible preference will be given to students enrolled in the Beedie School of Business pursuing an exchange in Asia.
