The inaugural Beedie Olympics that took place on July 7 at the Burnaby Campus of Simon Fraser University was a roaring success – one that brought together Beedie School of Business students for an important global cause.

Coinciding with the forthcoming London Summer Games taking place later this month, the Beedie Olympics represented a first-ever student engagement initiative aimed to strengthen the Beedie community through the power of sport, as well as to raise money for the international humanitarian organization Right to Play.

The on-campus event promoted the importance of community and social change by bringing together undergraduate students and alumni through friendly competition. Close to 90 people attended the event, including representatives from each of the major SFU Beedie clubs and associations. Four sports were hosted: capture the flag, flag football, handball, and dodgeball.

“We are thrilled with the overwhelmingly positive response we received from the Beedie Olympics participants,” Stephanie Wong, one of the event’s organizers, said. “We are pleased to have created this platform to foster community and teamwork between Beedie student clubs through friendly competition.”

The event, sponsored by Certified Management Accountants (CMA), the Simon Fraser Student Society, Thrifty Foods, and Scotiabank, was also a success in that it exceeded the organizers’ goal of raising $500 for Right to Play.

SFU Play, a student club at SFU that hosts sporting social events for students from all faculties throughout the year, partnered with the organizers for the event. Following the success of the Beedie Olympics, they have expressed a strong interest in holding the event in future years.

“Our vision is to see this event become an integral internal event in the faculty that will unite student clubs for many years in the future.”
