Director: Dr. Jing LiJing Li is a Professor of International Business and holds the Canada Research Chair in Global Investment Strategy at the Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University. She received her BA in Economics from Peking University and PhD in Business from Indiana University. Jing has studied international investment strategies of firms, emerging markets, state-owned enterprises, and the intersection of geopolitics, public policies, and firm strategies. She has published in leading business journals including Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of International Business Policy, Journal of Management Studies, and Strategic Management Journal, among others. Jing is equally passionate about teaching and engaging in activities that promote dialogue and collaboration among researchers, business leaders, and policymakers. |

He has worked for over forty years as an educator, researcher, and academic administrator. He has published five books and monographs and some 100 scholarly articles on broad themes of international business, including comparative institutional analysis, emerging markets, corporate ownership and governance, and public policy. His research has been published in a variety of top journals including Journal of International Business Studies, Journal of World Business, and Journal of International Business Policy, among others, and has been cited some 14,000 times. He is an award-winning teacher who was twice awarded the TD Canada Trust Teaching Award, and in 2014 was named the Academy of International Business (AIB) Educator of the Year. He has designed and delivered executive programs to managers in the private and public sectors, both in Canada and abroad. |
Advisory Council
Jack AustinJack Austin was a member of the Senate of Canada for 32 years, representing British Columbia. Throughout his years in public service, Austin has championed stronger relations between Canada and Asia. In 1971, as the serving deputy minister of Energy, Mines and Resources he was part of the first Canadian trade mission to China. He consequently served as president of the Canada China Business Council and co-chair of the Canada China legislative Association. He was instrumental in establishing the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. The centre is named to recognize his outstanding contribution to Canada-Asia relations. |

Stewart BeckStewart Beck is the President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Prior to joining APF Canada, Mr. Beck served as the Canadian High Commissioner to the Republic of India with concurrent accreditation to the Kingdom of Bhutan and to Nepal. He joined Canada's Department of External Affairs and International Trade (now Global Affairs Canada) in 1982 and served abroad in the United States, Taiwan, and the People's Republic of China. In Ottawa, he held a number of progressively more senior positions, including Director General of the North Asia Bureau, Director General Responsible for Senior Management and Rotational Assignments, and Assistant Deputy Minister for International Business Development, Investment, and Innovation. He was Consul General in Shanghai and prior to his posting to India, he was Consul General in San Francisco. |

Don CampbellDonald W. Campbell is the senior strategy advisor at Davis LLP. Prior to his time in the private sector, he had a distinguished career with Canada's Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In 2003, he was appointed by the prime minister as the Canadian Co-chair of the Canada-Japan Forum, an external advisory group established by the governments of Japan and Canada to provide advice and to promote the bilateral relationship between the two countries. Mr. Campbell also previously served Deputy Foreign Minister, Deputy Minister for International Trade, Canada's Ambassador to Japan and Canada's Ambassador to Korea. |

Joseph CaronJoseph Caron has more than 40 years’ experience in connecting Canada with Asia, serving at the highest levels of government and business. Mr. Caron has served as Canada’s Ambassador to the People’s Republic of China, Canada’s Ambassador to Japan, and High Commissioner to the Republic of India. Following retirement from Canada’s Foreign Service in 2010, he has been appointed to the Boards of Directors at Manulife Financial Corporation, Vancouver International Airport, and Westport Innovations Inc., the world's leading technology company in LNG and other gaseous fuels. He is a Distinguished Fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada and a Professor and Honorary Research Associate at the Institute of Asian Research of the University of British Columbia. |

Miro CernetigMiro Cernetig is the CEO of Catalytico, a strategic branding expert and an award-winning multimedia filmmaker and journalist. Miro has worked for The Globe & Mail, as bureau chief in Beijing, New York, Vancouver, Alberta and The Arctic, as well as The International Herald Tribune, The NYT, The Economist, The Toronto Star — where he was Montreal bureau chief — and The Vancouver Sun, where he was a daily columnist. Toby ChuToby Chu is the founder, President and Chief Executive Officer and Chairman of CIBT Education Group Inc. (“CIBT”) headquartered in Vancouver, Canada. He founded CIBT in 1994 and has since developed the company into an international corporation with 45 offices in Canada, China, Philippines, and other Asian countries. In 1993, Mr. Chu was named the “Top 40 Business People under the Age of 40.” In 1994, Mr. Chu became the top 30 finalists among 300 nominees across Canada for the Entrepreneur of the Year Award. In 2015, Mr. Chu earned the Entrepreneur of the Year Award by the Association of Chinese Canadian Entrepreneurs. |

He is a senior advisor to the China Development Research Foundation in Beijing China, and a senior fellow at the Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia, Canada. Colin HansenColin Hansen is the President and CEO of AdvantageBC, a private-sector organization dedicated to promoting British Columbia as a centre for international business. He was elected to the British Columbia Legislature in 1996 and served as Deputy Premier and Minister of Finance from June, 2008 to March, 2011. He also served for almost four years as Minister of Health and three years as Minister of Economic Development which included responsibility for the 2010 Olympics and the Asia Pacific Initiative. Before politics, He was President and Founding Partner of Image Group, which his wife, Laura, has subsequently built into BC’s largest promotional products company. Prior to that, he was the Vice-President, Finance and Administration for the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. |

Evaleen Jaager RoyEvaleen Jaager Roy advises CEOs and organizations on strategy and leadership.Her clients include some of the most successful companies in technology, gaming, architecture, medical research, investment and sustainability. Prior to starting her own company, she served as Vice President of Human Resources for Electronic Arts (EA), helping to build the industry in BC and leading the function in Canada, across Europe and for a global division. Prior to EA, Evaleen was HR Director for Westcoast Energy and she began her career in Finance in the US auto sector. Evaleen has served on the Board of Emily Carr University of Art + Design for six years, five of them as Chair. She is recognized as an outstanding Alumnus from Simon Fraser University, is a Vancouver Influential Business Woman Award winner as well as recipient of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Medal. In 2014, Evaleen was appointed to the Board of the Banff Centre – the world’s largest arts and creativity incubator – and to the Board of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. She is the previous Chair of the Board at Simon Fraser University (the first alumni to be elected to this role) and holds an MBA from Harvard Business School and a BBA (Hons) from Simon Fraser. |

Wei ShaoWei Shao is the National Practice Group Co-Leader for China at Dentons and specializes in international business transactions focusing on China. He has extensive experience in mergers and acquisitions, corporate and project financing, cross-border counseling, and general corporate and commercial transactions.Wei has represented Chinese investors and entrepreneurs, sovereign and investment funds, private and public companies as well as major SOEs in various significant transactions in Canada, especially in natural resource and mining. Wei has also advised Canadian and international companies in natural resources, manufacturing, high-tech, environment, infrastructure and financial transactions in China. He has also provided legal advice to government agencies and diplomatic missions from both Canada and China. He is a frequent speaker at various conferences on matters related to investment in or from China. |

Yuen Pau WooMr. Woo was President and CEO of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada from 2005-2014. He continues his association with the Foundation as Distinguished East Asia Fellow. He is a co-founder of China Global: The Vancouver Society for Promotion of Chinese Art and Culture, and serves as its President. He is also Senior Fellow in Public Policy at the Institute of Asian Research, University of British Columbia. Mr. Woo has previously worked as an Economist for the Institute of Southeast Asian Studies, the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and the Government of Singapore Investment Corporation. He is on the board of directors of the Public Policy Forum, the Ontario Brain Institute, and the Vancouver Academy of Music. He is also on the Global Council of the Asia Society and the Advisory Board of the Canadian Ditchley Foundation and the Mosaic Institute. In 2012, he was honoured with the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Award for his contributions to Canada-Asia relations. |

William is PhD co-supervisor at China University of Petroleum, visiting professor at Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics, Yunshan Scholar (2016-2019) at Guangdong University of Foreign Studies and a founding member of the International Case Research Association, which is affiliated to North American Case Research Association. William has published 20 Ivey cases and his research has been published in the International Journal of Operations and Production Management, International Journal of Emerging Markets, Project Management Journal, Chinese Management Studies and Sustainability. Kab Lae KimKab Lae Kim is a Research Fellow and Head of Financial Consumer Protection Research Center at Korea Capital Market Institute. He acquired his LL.M. and SJD (Doctor of Juridical Science) from Indiana University Maurer School of Law. He is an attorney-at-law licensed in New York. His research has focused on securities regulation, corporation, and financial taxation. He has been advising the Korean government on the issues relating to capital market, social finance, and financial taxation. Currently, he is researching on SIBs (Social Impact Bonds) and CGT (capital gains tax) on stock trading. |

Hristina DzharovaHristina Dzharova holds a BA degree in Business Administration and a graduate degree from the Maastricht University School of Business and Economics, specializing in Strategy and Innovation. Her graduate thesis work focused on top management team composition and venture capital investments across different territories. Hristina completed a three-month internship with Infosys Limited, Bangalore, India working on the Base of the Pyramid project, conducting interviews with founders and CEOs of major social enterprises, start-up companies and NGOs worldwide. Her internship work ultimately culminated in several important findings that pertain to base of the pyramid segment and facilitate enterprises in their attempt to sustainably approach the poor in emerging markets. Hristina’s research interests vary, ranging from social innovation and technology to venture capital and M&A practices. | |

JIYOUNG SHIN
Dr. Jiyoung Shin is a post-doctoral fellow at Beedie School of Business, Simon Fraser University. She received her MS and PhD in International Business from Korea University Business School, Korea University (South Korea). Prior to joining Beedie school of Business, she was a research fellow in Asian Business Research Center at Korea University. Dr. Shin also taught undergraduate and graduate level courses at Korea University and Hanyang University (South Korea). She received grants from the Korean government as a research assistant. Her research interests include corporate social responsibility of multinational companies (MNEs), non-market strategy, and sustainable development strategy of MNEs. | |
MATTHEW FOX
Matthew’s research interests include how people make ethical judgements and how organizational contexts promote or hinder ethical decision making. He recently completed his PhD in Business Administration at the Fuqua School of Business, Duke University, earned his B.A. in International Political Economy at Colorado College, and his MBA at the University of Nevada Reno. His dissertation examined the role of the legacy motive in guiding the actions of entrepreneurs. At Beedie, he worked on Social entrepreneurship in emerging economies. | |
KURT NORDER
Kurt is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow focusing on business models for the Base of the Pyramid. His work explores the interaction of the internal configurations with the external contexts as it applies to strategy, organization, and innovation. Kurt recently completed his PhD in International Business from the Moore School of Business at the University of South Carolina. His dissertation work was an exploration of cross-border business model adaptation in response to the many pressures typical of the multinational environment. Prior to school, Kurt worked as a Finance Manager for General Electric. He is Lean Six Sigma Black Belt certified and also holds a BS degree in Mechanical Engineering from Penn State University. | |
COLIN HAWES (柯霖)
Colin Hawes is a Postdoctoral Research Fellow with an interest in the intersection between business, law and culture: how cultures impact on the way business is done in different societies, and what happens to business laws when they are imported into a new cultural context. Colin grew up in the UK and gained a B.A. degree in Chinese Studies from the University of Durham. He then lived in China for three years (in Beijing and Wuhan), and moved to Canada to complete a Ph.D. in Asian Studies at UBC. Colin began researching Chinese and East Asian law while teaching Chinese language and culture at the University of Alberta. He subsequently completed his law degree and practised law in Vancouver focusing on Asia-related cases before joining the Law Faculty at University of Technology Sydney in 2005. He is currently on leave from UTS. | |
DANIEL KIM
Hyeong-Deug Kim (Daniel) has completed PhD study in IIT Madras in India and joined SFU business as a Post-Doctoral research fellow. Prior to completing his PhD, he spent 11 years in India as a MBA student, expatriate as a Korean company director (Sodiff India Materials), and an entrepreneur (Daibeck India Materials). With extensive international experience and cross-cultural studies, he helps other Korean expatriates to deal with different cultures. And this turns into his research interest. |

Ilan AlonIlan Alon is Professor and Dean of the School of Economics, College of Management Academic Studies. He was also Professor of Strategy and International Marketing at the University of Agder (UiA, Norway), Visiting Otto Mønsted Professor for International Business at the Copenhagen Business School (CBS, Denmark), and Leading Research Fellow at Higher School of Economics (HSE, Russia).He is also Editor-in-Chief of International Journal of Emerging Markets and the European Journal of International Management. Ilan Alon’s research has appeared in prestigious academic journals, such as the Harvard Business Review, Journal of International Marketing, International Marketing Review, Management International Review, Corporate Governance: An International Journal, and others. Ilan Alon’s research books on China include Huawei: Made in China for the World (Palgrave, forthcoming 2020) and Belt and Road Initiative (Palgrave, 2018). |

Paul BeamishPaul Beamish is a professor of International Business and General Management at Ivey Business School, Western University. He is a Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada, a Fellow of the Academy of International Business, Director of the International Business Institute and Research Fellow of the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Dr. Beamish has authored over 60 books and 141 journal articles in the areas of International Management, Strategic Management, and Joint Ventures and Alliances. He is the founder of the 39 Country Initiative which provide teaching and research materials to business schools in least developed countries free of charge. |

Bo ChenBo CHEN is the Chutian Professor of Economics in Huazhong University of Science and Technology and the Director of Optical Valley Institute on Free Trade Zone (FTZ). He is also a research associate of the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas. Since June 2013, Chen has participated in consultations for the Shanghai, Guangdong, and Hubei Pilot Free Trade Zones (FTZs) and frequently lectures senior government officials in China on economic policy issues. His advice has been used in reports to the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau. His opinions appear in various mainstream media such as CCTV, Xinhua Media, Lianhe Zaobao, BBC, The Economist, and the Wall Street Journal. |

Charles DhanarajCharles Dhanaraj is the Academic Director of the Doctor of Business Administration Program at Georgia State University. He was also the H.F. “Gerry” Lenfest Professor of Strategy at the Fox School of Business, Temple University, the Founding Executive Director of Fox’s Center for Translational Research in Business, and Executive Director of the Fox School’s Executive Doctorate in Business Administration program. His research focus is on strategic partnerships, global innovation, and emerging markets. In 2017, he was elected as a Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB). He serves as vice president for the AIB and deputy editor of Cross Cultural and Strategy Management, as well as a member on the editorial boards of six major journals. |

Dr. Li’s research interests focus on technology entrepreneurship and innovation (particularly in China’s transition economy), strategic alliances and multinational firms’ innovation in emerging markets, as well as the growth of China's technology clusters. His articles have appeared in Academy of Management Journal, Strategic Management Journal, Journal of Marketing, Organization Science, Journal of Product Innovation Management, Management and Organization Review, Journal of High Technology Management Research, Journal of International Marketing, and others. Mike PengMike W. Peng is the Jindal Chair of Global Strategy and Executive Director, Center for Global Business at the Jindal School of Management, University of Texas at Dallas. He is also a National Science Foundation Career Award winner and a Fellow of the Academy of International Business and the Asia Academy of Management. He is best known for his development of the institution-based view of strategy and his insights about the rise of emerging economies such as China in global business. With over 40,000 Google citations (among the top 1% most cited researchers worldwide), he is widely regarded as one of the most prolific and most influential scholars in global strategy. Dr. Peng's consulting clients include multinationals, educational and funding organizations, and national and international organizations. He is a regular commentator in a wide variety of publications. |

Chang Hoon OhChang Hoon Oh is the William and Judy Docking Professor of Strategy at the University of Kansas School of Business. He previously was the William Saywell Professor in Asia Pacific Business at the Beedie School of Business in Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, Canada. Oh was a distinguished visiting scholar at KAIST Graduate School of Business during summer 2023; the inaugural Alan Rugman Visiting Fellow in the Henley Business School, University of Reading, United Kingdom for the 2015–16 academic year; and a visiting professor in Korea University Business School for the 2015-16 academic year. He also worked for Brock University as an associate professor, and for the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University-Bloomington, as an associate instructor. He received his doctoral degree from the Kelley School of Business, Indiana University-Bloomington. Oh worked for Samsung Electronics and Samsung Corp. in various capacities. Rajneesh NarulaRajneesh Narula is the John H. Dunning Chair of International Business Regulation at the Henley Business School, University of Reading, UK. His research and consulting have focused on the role of multinational firms in development, innovation and industrial policy, R&D alliances and outsourcing. He is currently an editor of Journal of International Business Studies. In 2017, he was appointed an Honorary Officer of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire (OBE). He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, Manufactures, and Commerce (FRSA) in 2015. He is a regular commentator on business and economics issues on TV and radio, as well as a variety of print and online publications. He regularly acts as a consultant and advisor to the European Commission, UNIDO, UNCTAD and the OECD, World Bank among others. He holds honorary appointments at United Nations University-MERIT, Norwegian School of Business, Oxford University and the University of Urbino. |

Ravi RamamurtiRavi Ramamurti is the University Distinguished Professor of International Business and Strategy and Director of the Center for Emerging Markets at the D’amore-McKim School of Business, Northeaster University and a Fellow of the Academy of International Business (AIB). He received his B.Sc. (Physics) from Delhi University, his MBA from IIM-Ahmedabad and his DBA from Harvard Business School. He has been a visiting professor at HBS, MIT-Sloan, CEIBS-Shanghai, IMD-Lausanne, and the Wharton School. His research focuses on strategy and innovation in emerging economies as well as business-government relations in emerging economies. He has published several articles and books on multinationals from emerging markets and on the topic of “reverse innovation.” He teaches courses on the global business environment and global strategy, and electives on Competing in Emerging Markets. |

Peter WilliamsonPeter Williamson is Professor of International Management at the Judge Business School, University of Cambridge and Fellow and Director of Studies in Management, Jesus College. Professor Williamson has wide experience in research, consulting and executive education as well as serving as a non-executive director and chairman of both publicly listed companies and new ventures in industries as diverse as whisky, textiles, hedge fund management and software. He has been working with Chinese companies for over 35 years. He serves on the editorial boards of European Management Journal, Business Strategy Review, and Academy of Management Learning and Education. His research interests include: Globalisation and its implications for corporate strategy; strategies for success in China and the internationalisation of Chinese companies and their global impact, mergers and acquisition; business ecosystems and the management of networks of strategic alliances; strategies for a carbon-constrained world. He is the author over nine books and over 60 journal articles and a winner of the Sloan-PwC Award honouring those articles that have contributed most to the enhancement of management practice. |
