Why did you decide to pursue an MBA and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?

I serve as external counsel to many small businesses and a business degree will make me a better advisor. Also, I am working on expanding my skillset and taking up more business roles and I realized that in decision-making for growing small businesses, intuition needs to be backed by business and strategy fundamentals. While there is a lot of information on the internet, it can be challengin and time-consuming deciphering what is useful and what is up to date. Additionally, expanding my network while learning from industry professionals that make up our faculty are things that are valuable to me, hence the need for an MBA.

I chose SFU’S Beedie School of Business after studying its faculty, looking at the relevance of the course offerings for my goals for the MBA, talking to alumni and comparing its return on investment to other MBA programss. Post-graduation career support, the school's location in the scenic Vancouver downtown area and the graduate school recruitment team were also important factors in my decision.

What has been your favourite moment or experience at Beedie so far? What are you looking forward to?

I cannot pinpoint a favourite moment as so far I have had an amazing experience - from the orientation activities, meeting members of my cohort who are from every corner of the world and analyzing genius ideas and solutions during case study analysis and team problem-solving activities. Also, access to industry leaders to interview for class projects by virtue of their relationship with the school has been an amazing experience for me since I might otherwise never have the opportunity with my current qualifications to chat with them one-on-one and understand the driving force behind the change they seek to achieve. It has been a wonderful experience so far. I am looking forward to the International Applied Project, as an avid traveller, exploring a new country and culture while helping a local business to solve its problems sounds like a wonderful way to gain knowledge and spend my time.

How would you describe SFU Beedie’s culture?

The culture here is people-oriented, inclusive, and relaxed but drives responsibility. The people are kind, helpful and willing to help as long as you are willing to take the first step. Everyone, whether you are working alone or as a member of a team is responsible for their success. It can be competitive at times but in the real world, you are the leader who is going to be charged with looking out for and taking responsibility for others, Beedie makes sure you are equipped for that.
