Why did you decide to pursue a Master of Science in Finance and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?

I believe that studying the MSc Finance program will lay a solid foundation for my future career. I have worked in retail banking for around 5 years. I found that I had more passion in investment areas compared to day-to-day banking. I am interested in working in corporate finance, equity, or investment banking. From the MSc Finance program, I can learn how to use financial models to estimate the value of a project or asset, how to manage a portfolio, and how to reduce the cost and risk of a portfolio. One of the advantages of studying in Beedie is the opportunity to manage SIAS investment funds, which is one of the largest student-run funds in North America. Students can apply the knowledge and skills learned from the class to real practice. Also, there are many more invaluable resources, for example one-on-one career coaching and online networking.

What has been your favourite moment or experience at Beedie so far? What are you looking forward to?

In the first two weeks, I had joined many events and my favourite one was the alumni breakfast which provided me an opportunity to communicate with alumni, learn from their experience, and get inspired by their insight. I look forward to attending more company workshops which create a platform for me to build my connections with the company recruiters and staff and explore the working areas that attract me the most.

How would you describe SFU Beedie’s culture?

Beedie’s culture is about creating a collaborative and inclusive environment through respect for one another; cultivating innovative and socially responsible business leaders; and making meaningful impacts to the society to make it a better place for everyone.
