Why did you decide to pursue a Master of Science in Finance and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?

According to a study, policies by the World Bank achieves its objective of Shared Prosperity with the performance of the ‘Middle Class’ economic section. Being a part of Middle Income newly industrialized economy, from an early age we learned to efficiently use the limited resources at our disposal, particularly money. At the time, there weren’t many avenues for people to safely store their hard-earned money other than Fixed Deposits, which had rigid terms and high penalty charges, and gold, which most couldn’t afford. As a result, people preferred to hold cash or invest in post office schemes that offered low or no returns. This experience drove me to pursue my degree in finance to ensure a stable financial future, and also be of service to others. The recent pandemic triggered a period of personal growth and a deeper awareness of myself and others, which has driven me to pursue a career in Fundamental Equity Research and Analysis.

MSc in Finance from Simon Fraser University is intriguing as it offers 2 program highlights- The Research based series will enable me to collaborate with revered professors at the University on live projects. The professional-based series would allow me to connect with other experts in the sector and acquire valuable insight into the process of getting ready for the role of Research Analyst.

What has been your favourite moment or experience at Beedie so far? What are you looking forward to?

During the course, students will have the opportunity to administer the Student Investment Advisory Service Fund, Canada's largest student-run investment fund. I look forward to taking up the role as an Equity Research Analyst, which will allow me to hone my quantitative and qualitative abilities while also gaining significant real-world investing and risk management experience."

Even though I've only been in Vancouver for a month, my time here has been nothing short of spectacular with so many memories being made and moments being lived every day. Since the course is fast-paced and challenging there is always something to look forward to. The orientation week will always stand out because it gave me the chance to get to meet and connect with my fellow cohort members and express my gratitude to the wonderful staff whose tireless effort over the past few months has allowed international students to have a smooth transition to the program and country.

How would you describe SFU Beedie’s culture?

With the cohort being diverse and individuals coming from different parts of world and have accomplishments that I know little about, I am excited to break away from a familiar routine and to seek out new challenges, engaging with others on different ideas and subjects, stepping outside of my comfort zone and being able to ask questions resulting in intellectual, social and personal growth.

The culture at SFU Beedie is distinctive and diverse in that it acknowledges and appreciates the fact that we are individuals with different skillsets and background representing many racial and ethnic groups. Inclusiveness is an integral part of their identity with each individual having equal opportunity to information and resources. Students truly are at the center of everything they do with Professors and Administrators working tirelessly to ensure that our goals for professional development are achieved. It is a privilege to be a part of the ever-growing SFU family.
