What three words best describe your SFU MBA experience?
Career-changing, self-discovering, and busy (in the BEST way)
Why did you decide to pursue an MBA and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?
I originally did a post-grad business diploma to get a taste of what it was like to learn about business. I loved it! Shortly after completing my diploma, I hit a glass ceiling at work and knew I wanted to change industries into tech after participating in tech-oriented work projects. I had two choices: find another job while trying to change industries (not ideal) or upgrade my business education and network like crazy to enter a new industry. I decided that an MBA would give me the best chances at some serious career momentum within a new industry.
I decided to pursue an MBA at the Beedie School of Business at SFU because the school’s values strongly resonated with me. I enjoy being surrounded by individuals who are passionate about making a difference in their communities and that is exactly the kind of culture that is promoted at Beedie. The application process already encouraged lots of self-reflection, and I took this as indicative of the personal transformation I could expect at Beedie. It was the best career-decision I’ve made yet.
How did the SFU MBA program transform your career journey?
Networking, networking, networking! Beedie introduced me to a lot of people that helped me learn about my career options in trying to change my industry. Being driven to network not only grew my connections and made me more informed in my career choices, but also made me an expert at talking about myself which came in very useful in job interviews.
Beedie’s MBA coursework encourages big-picture thinking within the context of the business landscape at hand. Being introduced to this perspective is essential as students transition from being experts in a particular area, to being drivers of change playing an active role in organizational leadership. This thinking is habitually practiced in the context of group projects where good team hygiene will make or break your success. Working together with colleagues from around the globe in various professional backgrounds was a serious highlight.
I met amazing friends through the full-time program who I know I will be closely connected to throughout the duration of my career. Even after we left the classroom, we help each other discover new perspectives when it comes to business challenges at work.
What advice would you give to your past self if you were just starting your MBA?
Ignore your networking anxiety and just do it. The sooner you become comfortable with it, the sooner your conversations will lead to outcomes.
