Hilary Fife
MBA 2018
Manager, Sustainable Business Solutions at PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP (PwC)
“Completing the SFU MBA program helped me get both - from understanding how various aspects of businesses operate and an understanding of how sustainability could be further integrated across a business.”
What three words best describe your SFU MBA experience?
Collaborative, Motivating, Challenging
Why did you decide to pursue an MBA and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?
I knew graduating with an undergraduate degree in environmental science, I wanted to broaden my knowledge and understanding to more easily translate to many different industries and positions. I was particularly keen to get into a career in sustainability so I was particularly drawn to SFU Beedie School of Business given its focus on sustainability. I've also always wanted to head out to BC and the Segal campus's downtown Vancouver location made it easy and convenient for me to explore Vancouver and the west coast further.
How did the SFU MBA program transform your career journey?
Coming out of my undergraduate degree in environmental science, I had a significant amount of technical knowledge and I knew I wanted to get into sustainability. After looking around and applying to jobs, I knew I lacked basic business knowledge and needed to better differentiate myself from other candidates.
Completing the SFU MBA program helped me get both - from understanding how various aspects of businesses operate and an understanding of how sustainability could be further integrated across a business.
This ultimately helped me to land a job in sustainability and succeed in my role. I'm able to provide a technical perspective / understanding of environmental and social issues as well as translate it into a way that makes sense to VPs and CEOs.
What advice would you give to your past self if you were just starting your MBA?
The advice I would give myself would be to enjoy and take it all in - learn as much as you can in and outside the classroom. Get involved, develop lasting relationships with your classmates and broader SFU alumni network, and have fun!
What is your favourite place near the downtown Segal campus?
We would always hang out at Malone's Taphouse just a few doors down from the Segal campus to celebrate completing a big group project or exam. It was a great place to relax and get to know everyone in a casual setting outside of school.
