MBA 2015

Lead Project Manager, Virtual Care Programs at Canada Health Infoway
The most valuable skill I got from my MBA was the shifting and expanding of the way I think and solve business problems.

What three words best describe your SFU MBA experience?

Worthwhile, Intense, Developmental

Why did you decide to pursue an MBA and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?

Even though I started off my career as a clinical pharmacist, I always knew that I wanted to transition to the business side of the industry and based on that, I decided to pursue an MBA early on in my clinical career to provide me the necessary skills and mindset to easily transition into business roles within the healthcare industry. I decided to pursue an MBA at Beedie for a couple of reasons:

  1. I liked the fact that the program was well recognized in Canada and was geared towards individuals at the beginning to mid of their careers as that resonated with where I was in my career journey.
  2. I liked the fact that it was only a one year program, and would give me to opportunity to go back into the workforce in a timely manner and lastly.
  3. I liked the small cohort as I believed that would allow for more easy connections to be made amongst the candidates, and that was important to me in enhancing my MBA experience.

How did the SFU MBA program transform your career journey?

The most valuable skill I got from my MBA was the shifting and expanding of the way I think and solve business problems. Coming from a clinical background, my thinking was more rigid and focused on "how things should be" but the MBA helped expand my perspective and flexibility in assessing problems and coming up with creative solutions. It helped enhance my ability to think strategically about a business or organization, as well as being able to break it down to more tactical levels when required.

What advice would you give to your past self if you were just starting your MBA?

The advice I would give my past self is to trust the process and soak up every bit of the experience. It is easy when you are buried in assignments and studying to be focused mainly on how much work the MBA is, however, it is important to be able to look up ever so often and intentionally embrace every bit of the experience, as it goes by quite quickly.

What is your favorite place near the downtown Segal campus?

My favourite place has to be by Canada Place, as I have so many memories of lunches and dinners with other students at restaurants by Canada Place, either discussing upcoming course works and exams, or venting about challenges we were going through. Also the view of the mountains was always a remarkable sight.

I always saw myself working beyond clinical pharmacy. I felt that I could also shine on the business side of healthcare. I knew that with my strong clinical training an MBA would help open more doors and give me the mobility I was looking for in my career.
