Phil VanLaar

MBA 2018

Business Advisor, High Impact Firms at BDC
“The program equipped me with the tools I needed to see the bigger picture around business management and strategy and gave me new connections in the Vancouver business community.”

What three words best describe your SFU MBA experience?

Eye-opening, change, opportunity

Why did you decide to pursue an MBA and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?

Before starting the MBA program at SFU Beedie, I worked as a civil engineer at several Canadian engineering firms. I felt that I really needed to invest in myself if I wanted to make a successful transition into another industry or move into a senior management position

I chose SFU Beedie’s program because its campus is located in the heart of downtown Vancouver, where it’s just steps away from the business district. This made it easier to get out there to network and grow my connections in the business community. I also really enjoyed the smaller class sizes because I felt that it helped me build real connections with my professors and the students in my cohort.

How did the SFU MBA program transform your career journey?

The program equipped me with the tools I needed to see the bigger picture around business management and strategy and gave me new connections in the Vancouver business community. It allowed me to pivot from technical engineering to a strategic consulting career, where I work daily with Canadian business leaders to strengthen and grow their companies.

What advice would you give to your past self if you were just starting your MBA?

One of my top highlights was participating in case competitions across Canada. It was fun while challenging to work with a team of fellow MBA peers to assess the context of the case and come up with innovative solutions. The competitions let us apply what we were learning in the MBA program directly into real-world cases which were judged by industry professionals, so being able to hear their feedback on our recommendations was always rewarding.

What is your favorite place near the downtown Segal campus?

My top areas near the campus were any of the oceanfront areas where we could relax, get some fresh air, and see the beautiful West Coast scenery.

I always saw myself working beyond clinical pharmacy. I felt that I could also shine on the business side of healthcare. I knew that with my strong clinical training an MBA would help open more doors and give me the mobility I was looking for in my career.
