MBA 2019

Technical Project Manager at LiveSwitch Inc.
Vancouver has a booming tech sector and is home to plenty of budding entrepreneurs - a perfect environment for an MBA student.”

What three words best describe your SFU MBA experience?

Building meaningful relationships

Why did you decide to pursue an MBA and what drew you to the SFU Beedie School of Business?

I have always envisioned myself leading my own team - whether that’s through climbing the corporate career ladder, or starting my own business. Either way, I knew that an MBA program will equip me with the tools and experience I need to help me be successful.

The Beedie School of Business is right at the heart of downtown Vancouver, and is close to major companies such as Microsoft, Amazon, and SAP. Vancouver has a booming tech sector and is home to plenty of budding entrepreneurs - a perfect environment for an MBA student. I also considered other factors such as the compressed length of the program, the small class size, and the staff at Beedie who are really invested in helping the students succeed.

How did the SFU MBA program transform your career journey?

As an engineer, I have the tendency to focus on the technical side of things, oftentimes overlooking the bigger picture. The program courses and the different experiences it entails served as a foundation that trained me to look beyond that and consider the several aspects of an organization. Learning how to zoom in and out as needed, taking the stakeholders involved into consideration, triggers a whole new thought process on how I see my role. And then there are the class presentations, case competitions, and SFU Beedie’s Toastmasters that definitely helped me be more confident and articulate my ideas better.

What was the highlight or your favourite memory from the MBA program?

The local trip before the summer semester. It substantially increased my knowledge and awareness about B.C., especially about the challenges and success stories of the several Indigenous groups within the area. Moreover, it was a rare opportunity to have fun and spend time with my classmates outside the walls of the Segal. A whole week moving from hotels to another and travelling in a bus was indeed tiring but very much worth it.

What is your favorite place near the downtown Segal campus?

My favourite place is Stanley Park. This 1000-acre of green space offers plenty of different activities in any season - biking along the seawall, hanging out in the beach, or just taking a walk while admiring the beauty of nature. It is definitely one of my favourite places to unwind!

I always saw myself working beyond clinical pharmacy. I felt that I could also shine on the business side of healthcare. I knew that with my strong clinical training an MBA would help open more doors and give me the mobility I was looking for in my career.
