Frequently Asked Questions
What terms can I apply to?
Applications are accepted for our Fall (September) and Spring (January) terms for students applying through the High School admission pathway.
If I put the Beedie School of Business as my alternate choice program, will I be considered for admission?
No. To be considered for admission to the Beedie School of Business you must select Business as your first choice program in the EducationPlannerBC application. If you choose Business as your alternate choice, your application will not be adjudicated.
What is the difference between applying for the SFU Burnaby or Surrey Campus?
In EducationPlannerBC, the campus you select (e.g. Burnaby or Surrey) will determine where you take BUS 201 - Introduction to Business, which is a mandatory course for your first term in the business program.
Admission to Beedie is not campus specific. For example, an applicant does not have better odds at gaining admission if they apply for the Burnaby campus as opposed to the Surrey campus.
Can I apply for a Joint Major or Business Concentration at the time of application?
No. Applicants are able to apply for a Joint Major program or declare a Business Concentration(s) once they have been accepted. Our program is designed to give you foundational knowledge in the different concentration areas so that you can discover your passions and align future career goals before you begin to deepen your knowledge in your chosen field - we encourage BBA students to declare their concentration by their third year.
More information on our nine concentrations, including Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Strategic Analysis and more, can be found here. Once you've been admitted, connect with a Beedie Academic Advisor to plan your next steps.
How are applications assessed?
The SFU Admissions Department requests, receives, and evaluates all documents (e.g. transcripts, IELTS, SAT etc.) for admission. Required documents for admission can be reviewed in your Student Center once you have submitted your application through EducationPlannerBC.
Your Supplemental Application will be evaluated by SFU Beedie's Supplemental Evaluation Committee. Applicants are competitively selected for admission based on a combination of their academic performance and Supplemental Application.
How will I know if SFU Admissions has received my documents?
You may review your item statuses by reviewing the To Do List in your Student Center. Items that have been received by SFU Admissions will have a green check mark.
I’ve been asked to self-report my grades. Where can I find more information on the self-reported grades process?
The self-reported grades process is completed in your Student Center under the Admission section. More information about what to report can be found here.
What are the competitive grade requirements?
We encourage students presenting grade 11 and grade 12 grades (or equivalent) in the 80s and above to apply.
I’m a B.C. high school student, can you use my Calculus mark in lieu of Pre-Calculus?
No. Calculus 12 (or equivalent) cannot be used in place of Pre-Calculus 12 for admission.
What can I do if I don’t have one of the required courses?
You can review the course requirements for High School applicants across different curriculums here. If you do not meet the requirements for admission, you may wish to apply to another SFU Faculty and review our Internal Transfer admission pathway for current SFU students, or pursue the College/University Transfer admission pathway.
I have questions about the Beedie Supplemental Application, where can I find more information?

Refer to SFU Financial Aid and Awards for details on the application process and requirements.

Applications are evaluated on an ongoing, rolling basis. Please ensure you submit your documents, and any other To Do List items in a timely manner. Updates on your admission status will be visible in your Student Center.
Why was my application denied?

Transfer units
Students within British Columbia (B.C.) should refer to the BC Transfer Guide for course transferability. Sometimes, to gain transfer units for a single course, two or more courses must have been completed at your current college/university. Simon Fraser University supports the Pan-Canadian Protocol on transferability of first and second year courses from any recognized Canadian university.
Transfer Handouts:
- Alexander College
- Capilano University

Repeated courses
Of the required courses, a maximum of two of the eight courses may be repeated one time each for admission.

If you have achieved a grade lower than a C- in your first attempt at 3 of the 8 required courses, you will not be eligible for admission consideration to the program as only two repeats are permitted.

No. Applicants are able to apply for a Joint Major program or declare a Business Concentration(s) once they have been accepted to the program. More information on our nine concentrations, including Accounting, Marketing, Finance, Strategic Analysis and more, can be found here.
Please note that the Accounting Concentration requires a formal application; once admitted, connect with a Beedie Academic Advisor to plan your next steps.
How are applications assessed?
The SFU Admissions Department requests, receives, and reviews all documents (e.g. transcripts, IELTS, SAT etc.) for admission. Required documents for admission can be reviewed in your Student Center once you have submitted your application through EducationPlannerBC.
If your application is placed within the GPA with Supplemental Application category, your Supplemental Application will be evaluated by SFU Beedie’s Supplemental Evaluation Committee. How will I know if SFU Admissions has received my documents?
You may review your item statuses by reviewing the To Do List in your Student Center. Items that have been received by SFU Admissions will have a green check mark.
What is the competitive GPA?
Applicants must present a minimum Business Admission Average of 2.80 on the 8 required courses to be eligible for admission consideration. Please also refer to the minimum GPA requirements for admission consideration to SFU.
What does a minimum 5 out of the 8 required complete, with up to 3 in-progress mean?
To be eligible for admission consideration to the Beedie School of Business, applicants must have final grades for a minimum of 5 of the 8 required courses, with the remaining (up to 3) in progress by the document deadline.
Final transcripts with completed coursework will be required before offers of admission are finalized; all 8 required courses must be successfully completed prior to starting your studies at the Beedie School of Business. If you are missing 1 of the 8 required courses, you will not be eligible for admission consideration.
What if I plan to apply for Fall (September) admission but will be taking courses over the Summer?
Fall applicants may complete up to 3 outstanding admission courses over the Summer term. Be sure to report August as your end date in the EducationPlannerBC application so that SFU Admissions can request for an updated transcript that shows your Summer course enrollment.
I’m not sure if I have the 8 required courses, can you review the courses I’ve taken for transfer credit?
If your previous institution is in British Columbia, you can use the BC Transfer Guide to review how your courses transfer to SFU. Be sure to put Simon Fraser University as the receiving institution in the course search (e.g. from Douglas College to SFU).
Courses from institutions outside of British Columbia are evaluated by SFU Admissions for transfer credit after you’ve submitted your EducationPlannerBC application. More details can be found above under the Required Courses section.
What do I do if I don’t have the 8 required courses?
You may complete any missing courses at another institution (review the BC Transfer Guide for eligible courses), or apply to another Faculty at SFU and if admitted, pursue our Internal Transfer admission pathway for current SFU students.
What if I have more than 2 repeats?
You may only repeat 2 of the 8 required courses 1 time each for the Business Major program.
If more than 2 required courses are repeated, the best 2 will be used to calculate your Business Admission Average. We evaluate subsequent repeated, required courses based on the letter grade achieved on the first attempt at the course.
If you have achieved a grade lower than a C- in your first attempt at 3 of the 8 required courses, you will not be eligible for admission consideration to the program as only 2 repeats are permitted.
I have a cluster course from my current institution (i.e. 2 courses at my current institution = 1 of the 8 required courses). How will you calculate my letter grade for this course?
We use a weighted average to calculate the letter grade for cluster transfer courses.
Example 1: Courses With Equal Weight
DOUG ACCT 1110 (3) + DOUG ACCT 1210 (3) = SFU BUS 251 (3) & BUS 1XX (3)
(6 units at Douglas College = 3 units for BUS 251 and 3 units for BUS 1XX at SFU)
If a student received an A+ in ACCT 1110 and a B+ in ACCT 1210, the following calculation would be made:
4.33 GPA points x (3 units/6 units) + 3.33 GPA points x (3 units/6 units) = 3.83 GPA points, which will be applied to BUS 251 (3 units)
Example 2: Courses With Different Weights
LANG STAT 1181 (3) + LANG STAT 1182 (1) = SFU BUS 232 (4)
(4 units at Langara College = 4 units for BUS 232 at SFU)
If a student received an A+ in STAT 1181 and a B+ in STAT 1182, the following calculation would be made:
4.33 GPA points x (3 units/4 units) + 3.33 GPA points x (1 unit/4 units) = 4.08 GPA points, which will be applied to BUS 232 (4 units)
I have taken more than one ENGL/PHIL/WL courses. Which one will you use in my admission evaluation?
We will use the course which is most advantageous, keeping in mind our repeated course policy above.
I have “P” or “Pass Equivalent” grade from the Spring 2020 term. How will this impact my application?
Please review our Pass/Fail grade FAQ here.
When will I receive my Supplemental Application invitation?
You will not receive an invitation to complete the Supplemental Application until all required documents on your to-do list have been submitted and evaluated by the SFU Admissions Department in order to calculate your Business Admission Average on the 8 required courses.
To ensure timely access to the Supplemental Application, you are encouraged to submit your documents well in advance of the document deadline. Be sure to frequently monitor the email address you provided to SFU for your Supplemental Application invitation.
I have questions about the Supplemental Application. Where can I find more information?

Example 2: Courses With Different Weights
LANG STAT 1181 (3) + LANG STAT 1182 (1) = SFU BUS 232 (4)
(4 units at Langara College = 4 units for BUS 232 at SFU)
If a student received an A+ in STAT 1181 and a B+ in STAT 1182, the following calculation would be made:
4.33 GPA points x (3 units/4 units) + 3.33 GPA points x (1 unit/4 units) = 4.08 GPA points, which will be applied to BUS 232 (4 units)
