Academic Advising
Plan Your Term
Appropriate and mindful course planning will contribute to achieving your academic goals and success. A good course plan will look different for every student depending on their academic strengths and commitments outside of academic work. Beedie academic advisors are happy to help you plan your courses, so you feel confident and prepared for the upcoming terms.
Here are some general recommendations:
- Manage your course load by balancing required and elective courses
- Take one or two challenging courses at a time
- Book an appointment with a Beedie Academic Advisor to brainstorm different options and gain an advisor’s perspective in course planning

Academic Plan
In BUS 203 and BUS 300, students will work with an academic advisor to develop an academic plan. An academic plan outlines the courses and experiences you plan to complete in the next two terms. We aim to help you build a plan that aligns with your interests and goals in the Business Major program.
An academic plan will help you proactively plan your terms, identify challenges, roadblocks, and opportunities ahead of time. A comprehensive academic plan will also serve as a communication tool for you and your advisor. You may learn more about the academic plan on our Academic Skills and Support page.
Course Outlines
Course outlines include important information about the course, including learning outcomes, delivery format, expectations, reading lists, assessment formats, and more. Each instructor has their own expertise, perspective, and teaching style on the course they teach. Course outlines provide valuable insight into the course for you to consider when planning your terms.
Course outlines usually contain all relevant details about prerequisites. General information about Business Major program and course requirements is stated on the SFU Academic Calendar
WQB Courses
All students admitted to an undergraduate degree at SFU must complete a minimum of 36 units of Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth (WQB) designated courses with a grade of C- or higher. Students transferring from a BC college with 60 units should consider completing some transferable WQB courses prior to admission to SFU. Learn more about WQB requirements at SFU’s Undergraduate Curriculum Initiative webpage.
- Writing, Quantitative, and Breadth certified courses
- Unsure if you have the prerequisite(s) needed to take a W (FAL) or Q (FAN) course? Consult with an academic advisor to determine your eligibility
- Two Foundation Courses are available to students who do not meet the grade threshold to enroll in W and/or Q courses
