Available Awards and Terms of Reference (TOR)

All applications are to be submitted to ugclerk@sfu.ca by 11:59pm on Friday, September 15, 2023. All applications require the following three (3) items to be submitted as a single, merged PDF, titled: “yourfullname.studentnumber.nameofscholarshiporaward.pdf”:

  1. CV or resume
  2. Letter of intent (not to exceed 2 pages)
  3. Any additional letters of reference or recommendation, or other supporting materials that are either requested by the terms of reference, or that you choose to include as further support for your application.
    • Letters are optional where they are not specifically requested by the terms of reference (TOR), they can, however, be helpful.

Only one award application package per email. Please state the name of the award you are applying for in the email subject line and include your SFU ID number in the body of the email.

In addition to the Terms of Reference noted on each award, unless otherwise stated, all students must meet the following criteria for:

Awards:

  • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.00 and be in good academic standing.
  • Be enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) units of standard graded courses in the term of award. Challenge, audit, and non-credit courses are not considered.

In the case the student in their first term or a transfer student, they must possess an equivalent secondary school or college standing.

For graduating awards, where the TOR specify that the award be granted to a graduating student, enrollment in nine (9) units of standard graded courses in the current term (Fall 2023) or in any of the previous two terms (Summer 2023 or Spring 2023).

Award recipients will be contacted directly by the SFU Financial Aid and Awards department. Due to the high volume of applications, only students selected to receive awards will be notified.

One award, valued at $1,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • Enrolled full-time in the Beedie School of Business;
  • In good academic standing; and
  • Demonstrated evidence or achievement in some level of entrepreneurship

Applicants should include a letter detailing their entrepreneurial activities.

One award, valued at $3,100, will be granted annually in any term to a full-time undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

  • Enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Business Administration Program in the Beedie School of Business in the term of eligibility (Fall 2023);
  • Completed a minimum of 60 SFU units;
  • A declared concentration in Accounting;
  • In good academic standing, and has a demonstrated history of exceptional community service

Applications must include:

  • A statement from the applicant describing their exceptional community service; and

  • A letter of reference from an individual who can attest to the same
  • The Beedie Business Award, an annual award, was established in 2012 with funding from a portion of the spending allocation from the Beedie Family Undergraduate Student Experience Endowment Fund, which was established in 2011 with a generous gift by Simon Fraser University alumnus Ryan Beedie. The purpose of this annual award is to recognize undergraduate students majoring in business who have demonstrated exceptional community service and engagement.

    Fund Administration: The funding for this award will come from a portion of the spending allocation from the Beedie Family Undergraduate Student Experience Endowment Fund. Each year, the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Programs in the Beedie School of Business will initiate the transfer of funds from the endowed fund to the spending account for this award.

    This award, valued at $3,000, will be granted in the Fall term to a full-time undergraduate student who:

    • Is a Canadian citizens or permanent resident of Canada;
    • Is in good academic standing and enrolled in a major program in the Beedie School of Business; and
    • Has demonstrated exceptional community/volunteer service

    Preference will be given to applicants who are registered in a study abroad exchange. Preference will also be given to applicants who have completed an international co-op work placement in one of the previous two terms and are currently enrolled full-time in the Fall term of application.

    The student's application should include a CV outlining their community/volunteer service involvement and must include a letter of reference from someone who can attest to the student's service in the community.

    One award, valued at $1,300, will be granted annually in any term to a full-time undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree program in the Beedie School of Business with a declared concentration in Management Information Systems (MIS), or is completing the Certificate in Business Analytics and Decision Making (BADM), or the Certificate in Business Technology Management (BTM) in the term of eligibility (Fall 2023);
    • In good academic standing, and has a demonstrated history of engagement in technology-focused work experience or technology-focused community involvement/activities

    Please note that preference will be given to undergraduate students identifying as a woman in programs where they are underrepresented and until such time as gender parity is achieved.

    Applications must include:

    • A resume and/or co-curricular record outlining the applicant’s involvement in technology-focused work experience or technology-focused community involvement/activities; and
    • A letter of reference from a supervisor or community member who can attest to the same

    One award, valued at $6,700, will be granted in any term of each year to an undergraduate student who fulfills the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in the Beedie School of Business in the term of eligibility (Fall 2023);
    • Nominated or self-nominated with a faculty member reference as having participated successfully in one of the Beedie School of Business's key entrepreneurship programs such as Change Lab, the SFU Venture Accelerator, or Opportunity Fest; and
    • In good academic standing

    Applications must include:

    • A CV outlining the applicant’s history of entrepreneurship training and ventures; and
    • A letter of reference from a faculty member who can attest to the same

    Please note: preference may be given to students who have a declared concentration in Entrepreneurship and Innovation.

    One award, valued at $1,600, will be granted annually in any term to a full-time undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree program in the Beedie School of Business with a concentration in Finance in the term of eligibility (Fall 2023);
    • In good academic standing, and has a demonstrated history of volunteerism

    Applications must include:

    • A statement from the applicant describing their volunteerism; and
    • A letter of reference from an individual who can attest to the same

    One award, valued at $2,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree program in the Beedie School of Business in the term of eligibility (Fall 2023);
    • In good academic standing, and
    • Demonstrated outstanding leadership through community involvement, volunteering, and/or service to their school

    Applications must include:

    • A resume;
    • A one-page letter outlining the applicant’s community service, volunteerism, and/or service to their school;
    • A letter of reference from an individual who can attest to the same

    One award, valued at $2,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s program in the Beedie School of Business;
    • In good academic standing; and
    • Volunteered with organizations or charities involved with research, support services and/or health policies surrounding cancer

    Applications must include:

    • A one-page statement from the applicant outlining their participation with organizations or charities involved with research, support services and/or health policies surrounding cancer; and
    • A letter of reference from an individual who can verify the student's involvement with the relevant charity or organization

    The award is valued at a minimum of $5,000 per academic year and is renewable for three more years for a total of four years ($20,000 total disbursement).

    To receive the award, students must meet the following criteria:

    • Pursuing a Bachelor’s program in the Beedie School of Business;
    • Enrolled in their first year of studies;
    • Enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) standard graded units in the term of the award (Fall 2023);
    • Are Canadian citizens or permanent residents; and
    • Have expressed an interest in studying and pursuing a career in finance

    Applications must include a one-page statement from the applicant describing their interest in studying and pursuing a career in finance. To receive the second and subsequent award disbursements, students must achieve a minimum CGPA of 2.00 and be enrolled in a minimum of nine (9) standard graded units in the term of the award disbursement.

    One award, valued at $5,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program in the Beedie School of Business in the term of the award;
    • In good academic standing;
    • A demonstrated history of activity in addition to academics such as volunteerism, community involvement, extra-curricular activities and/or athletics; and
    • Entered SFU from School District #79 (Duncan, Cowichan Lake) or from Vancouver Island

    Primary preference will be given to a student who entered SFU from School District #79 (Duncan, Cowichan Lake).

    Secondary preference will be given to a student who entered SFU from Vancouver Island.

    If no suitable candidates from the first or secondary preference are identified, the award will be carried over to the next term or year.

    One award, valued at $1,000, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Business Administration degree program in the Beedie School of Business;
    • In good academic standing; and
    • Completed at least 60 units toward the requirements for a degree

    Preference will be given to students who have been employed full-time in the hospitality industry for at least one year before entering or returning to university.

    Applicants should include a letter detailing their employment history prior to entering or returning to university studies, and a letter of reference verifying this experience.

     Four awards, valued at $2,500 each, will be granted to undergraduate students enrolled full-time in the Bachelor of Business Administration Program in the Beedie School of Business and who fulfill the following criteria:

    • Demonstrated commitment to—and achievement in—social innovation*
    • Good academic standing

    Applications must include:

    • A statement from the applicant describing their commitment to—and achievement in—social innovation; and
    • A letter of reference from an individual who can attest to the same

    * Social innovation refers to a response to a social or environmental problem, which, once adopted, results in better solutions than existing approaches. Effective social innovations have the potential for transformative impact within communities, regions, or systems; are grounded in principles of justice, equity, diversity and inclusion; and centre the priorities and perspectives of communities impacted by the issue. Applicants should demonstrate a clear and active contribution to one or more social innovation issue areas, including a commitment to deeply understanding the related problem before taking action.

    One award, valued at $2,100, will be granted annually in any term to an undergraduate student who meets the following criteria:

    • Enrolled full-time in a Bachelor’s degree program in the Beedie School of Business in the term of eligibility (Fall 2023);
    • A declared concentration in Accounting;
    • In good academic standing, and
    • An interest in pursuing a career and/or further credentials in Accounting

    Applications must include:

    • A statement outlining the student’s commitment to pursue a career and/or further credentials in accounting; and
    • A letter of reference from a supervisor or faculty member who can attest to the same

    Preference will be given to applicants who are interested in pursuing their CPA designation.

    Available Scholarships and Terms of Reference  (TOR)

    In addition to the Terms of Reference noted on each scholarship, unless otherwise stated, all students must meet the following criteria for:

    Scholarships:

    • Have a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.50.
    • Be enrolled in a minimum of 12 units of standard graded courses in the term of award. Challenge, audit and non-credit courses are not considered.
    • Have completed at least 12 units of standard graded courses at SFU.
    • A student holding an SFU Entrance Scholarship is not eligible for any other University administered scholarships.

    In the case the student in their first term or a transfer student, they must possess an equivalent secondary school or college standing.

    Scholarship recipients will be contacted directly by the SFU Financial Aid and Awards department. Due to the high volume of applications, only students selected to receive scholarships will be notified.

    The Scotiabank Student Scholar in the Faculty of Business Administration, valued at a portion of the income earned on the Endowment, will be granted annually to a Beedie School of Business student with at least 90 units who exemplifies the aspects of a well-rounded scholar, academic excellence and community involvement. Academic excellence is based on academic merit as determined by cumulative grade point average (CGPA).

    Community involvement may be service to the university community or the community at large. Students should submit the following documentation:

    • A one-page cover letter describing their recent unpaid volunteer/community service;
    • A resume outlining unpaid volunteer service, including dates and total hours of community service for the past two years;
    • At least one reference letter supporting their recent community/volunteer involvement

    A scholarship, valued at a portion of accrued interest, is for a full-time undergraduate student enrolled in the Co-op Program of the Beedie School of Business, including the co-op term. The scholarship may be granted in the co-op term.

    The scholarship, valued at $1000, will be granted annually in any term, to an undergraduate student who fulfills the following criteria:

    • In excellent academic standing (minimum CGPA of 3.50);
    • In their third or fourth year of study; and
    • Has a declared concentration in Accounting or Finance

    Collection of Information Notice:

    The information in this application is collected under the authority of the University Act (R.S.B.C. 1996, c.468), It is related directly to and needed by the University. The information will be used to evaluate Departmental Nomination Awards and Scholarships. Additionally, information may be shared with donors and be utilized for future promotion of awards and scholarships.
