Competitions

Away Competitions

We carefully select the best competitors to represent SFU Beedie at regional, national, and international competitions. Competitors are chosen based on academic performance, competitive skills, and performance in competition training and internal case competitions.

How does the Beedie School of Business select teams for external competitions?

  • Case Draft: Typically, an open call where students submit an individual response to a case provided. This is an opportunity to showcase skills as each applicant will individually deliberate on a case and present their solution to the coaches. From receipt of the case to presentations, a case draft can span anywhere from 3 - 7 days.
  • Pathway Program: Programs like the Advanced Case Training Program (ACTP) where competition coaches work with teams of students throughout a period of 4 - 5 weeks. The program concludes with a capstone presentation after which coaches select the students who have impressed them.
  • Expressions of Interest: An application process with no case deliberation but often times with specific requirements like previous course work and case competition experience. Expressions of interest seek specific skills versus the Case Draft and Pathway Program. This process is recommended for more senior and experienced competitors.

To be considered for inclusion on a case competition team, you must apply to the any of the pathways listed above. Recruitment happens in the fall and spring each year. Coaches will select their teams from the applicant pool and begin an intensive training schedule up to 8 months before the competition.

As a case competitor, you will:

  • Undergo in-depth training and practice on case analysis and presentation skills
  • Learn to be a team player and make life-long connections with peers
  • Impress future employers with your hands-on experience
  • Have the chance to travel across Canada, USA, or overseas
