Becky Wong

Accounting

BBA Alumnus

“I felt really supported at SFU Beedie and because of that, I was able to accomplish so much.”

As an Accounting major, Becky is used to dealing with money. Rather than limit her financial education to the classroom, she decided to leverage her experience to benefit others by co-founding an award winning social enterprise that has since imparted invaluable financial literacy skills upon 131 at-risk youths.

My experience at SFU Beedie

When I started at SFU Beedie, I personally didn't know about budgeting, credit cards, or how debt works and neither did my friends. Through learning how to manage my own personal finances and witnessing the financial mistakes made by my peers, I realized there was a gap in financial literacy education.

I wanted to solve this problem so I developed a program with Enactus SFU called Count on Me—a program that takes at-risk youths through financial literacy workshops covering cover goal setting, budgeting, resume development, and job interview skills. I constructed it so it would make a double impact where the students teaching the workshops would learn just as much about finances as the youths taking the program. Getting extensively involved in SFU Beedie student life allowed me to leave a lasting legacy for future students.

My Journey

I joined Enactus SFU and initially was a workshop coordinator for one of Enactus SFU's many initiatives, Banner Bags. After that, I decided to create my own program, Count on Me. This allowed me to help teach financial basics to youth from three alternative programs in and around Vancouver. The success of this program led me to receiving the Runner Up prize at the Enactus Canada Nationals 2013 Capital One Financial Literacy Challenge and three years later, this program took home first place in the same category.

In addition to Count on Me, I competed at JDC West in 2014 and 2015 as well as went on exchange to the National University of Singapore and Chulalongkorn University in Bangkok.
