BBA: Anushka Daruka

Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Certificate in Business Analytics and Decision Making

“Getting involved in the plethora of opportunities that SFU Beedie has to offer has helped me grow personally and professionally. Such hands-on exposure has allowed me to take an active role in my learning process, build a community at SFU Beedie, and engage in diverse experiences.”

My academic journey

My interest in pursuing a bachelor’s degree in business administration stems from my fascination with the complexity of interdisciplinary areas in the business field of study. As an aspiring social entrepreneur, I am inspired by the endless opportunities to innovate and integrate the principles and techniques employed in the business field to solve issues facing the world today.

My SFU Beedie experience

I took charge of my learning beyond the classroom by getting involved in many extracurricular activities to gain skills and build my network. I’ve been involved in student organizations like Axis Consulting as well as leadership and mentorship programs like Passport to Leadership, SFU Beedie Protégé, and the BASS Mentorship program.

As the director of events at Axis Consulting, a student-led pro-bono consulting service, I developed our organizational culture and strengthened team bonds by hosting a series of socials and workshops. Beyond the skills I developed from my role, I also had the wonderful opportunity to shadow the consulting teams and actively participate during team and client meetings. Axis has been like a second family away from home, constantly supporting me as I navigate my journey at SFU Beedie.

SFU Beedie Protégé and Passport to Leadership have not just empowered me as a leader but also helped me develop a greater sense of self-awareness by taking a deep dive into what great leadership means. Being surrounded with passionate and like-minded individuals has kept me motivated and given me a unique network and community.

I was able to give back to SFU Beedie by volunteering for pillar events and case competitions and by doing so, support other students in sharing and engaging in experiences that shape some of our most impactful moments at SFU Beedie.

My courses have taught me the business acumen and skills applicable to my extracurricular responsibilities. Some of the most relevant and applicable course concepts I have learned so far are from “Behaviour in Organizations” (BUS 272) and one of my favorite elective courses, “Visual Communication Design” (IAT 110)”.

I am beyond thrilled to be embarking on my JDC West journey and to work alongside such experienced coaches and a wonderful team and immerse myself in a rigorous yet rewarding journey.

In five years, I want to complete my bachelor’s degree with co-op and advance my skills to drive my career. My ideal path would include at least one work abroad opportunity to gain a more diverse and global understanding of the corporate world. By the end of my studies, I would hope to have built lasting relationships at work and school.

I hope to continue mentoring and making an impact in the SFU community well beyond graduation. With the goal of creating social impact through my work, I’m drawn towards the management consulting profession. My long-term goal is to pursue an entrepreneurial career path and run a company of my own!
