BBA: Luke Shen
Accounting, Human Resource Management
“If I could provide a single piece of advice to prospective students: Get involved in extracurriculars. Treat it not as something extra, but rather a fundamental component of your education.”
MY JOURNEY
My experience transferring from another B.C. college to SFU Beedie was seamless. What I liked about SFU Beedie’s transfer policy was that as long you hit a certain GPA threshold, you were admitted – no entrance essays, no reference letters, etc. Moreover, the transfer checklist was well designed. I knew exactly what courses I needed (and would need), which allowed me to plan optimally with confidence.
I chose to pursue a concentration in accounting because it’s the “language of business.” Imagine setting down roots in a country and not being fluent in the native tongue. In the business world, you can have the most brilliant idea but if you can’t translate it into bottom-line financial impact, then your idea is unlikely to get the green light.
While admittedly a bit biased, I truly believe Accounting is the best concentration at SFU Beedie.
MY SFU BEEDIE EXPERIENCE
In comparing and contrasting my post-secondary experiences, I think what sets SFU Beedie apart is the fact you’re in an environment with countless smart, ambitious go-getters. This rubs off. It’s both humbling (in a good way) and inspiring at the same time. It challenges you to raise your standards and bring your A game.
During my time at SFU Beedie I was involved with several clubs. Getting involved has been pivotal in setting myself up for career success in myriad ways. It helped build what I call “connective tissue”—the soft skills that makes one a well-rounded job candidate, and person, in general.
A highlight was interaction with recruiters: I got first-hand exposure to their recruiting philosophy, processes, goals, and develop intimate knowledge of the type of candidate they’re looking for.

NEXT STEPS
Upon graduation, my first stop will be completing an internship at PricewaterhouseCoopers in their ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) Risk Advisory practice.
Afterwards, I will be starting full-time at Deloitte’s Audit and Assurance practice where I will be building my career and simultaneously pursuing my Chartered Professional Accountant (CPA) designation.
In 5-10 years, I hope to be in a senior manager role leading my own team.
