My Journey

I am a financing specialist in the Royal Bank of Canada's Commercial Financial Service Department in British Columbia. I’m responsible for underwriting commercial deals ranging from $1.25 million to $5 million and work closely with the sales manager to understand the client's financial needs and provide them with the best credit structure to help them grow and reduce costs. I have a background in economics and commerce and recently completed my CPA.

In this program, I was interested in learning about three things in particular: how to have more effective sales meetings with clients, how to optimize HR and payment solutions, and how to improve operations.

My Experience

This program has impacted my understanding of my work in the client service industry. Digital technology is part of our future and will impact our daily life, but transforming people's mindsets to embrace this future can be difficult. This experience has given me a deeper understanding of the importance of managing the digital transformation process and using digital technology as a tool. This program also allowed me to reflect on my communication and leadership skills, leading me to embrace the learning journey, encourage teamwork, and celebrate success as a team.

I also appreciate SFU Beedie’s investment in their students through their care for students and encouragement in helping students achieve the best outcomes through their programs. In my experience, this program is unique in its focus on creating a personal and flexible learning experience, rather than being grades-driven.

Highlights

As a result of this digital transformation management program, I learned how to think like a consultant. The program has taught me about leadership, coaching, and changing mindsets. I can now apply these enhanced skills to better communicate with and impact my team. I am also applying practical examples from the program to better understand client needs and prevent missed opportunities. Our team is now using what we learned to set realistic expectations with clients.

I believe that technology is driven by humans and that users play a big role in digital transformation, collaborating with technology and people to design a product that benefits users the most.

Advice for Future Students

Approach this program with an open mind, embrace the changes brought about by technology, and don’t be resistant to it. Being a part of this change will be a fun and enjoyable experience, and it will help you develop a better version of yourself after completing the program.
