My Journey
I work in healthcare and have a lot of senior clinical leadership experience in organizations in Toronto and Vancouver, and my experience is focused in digital transformations of healthcare organizations. I’m currently part of a team that’s building the new St Paul's Hospital in Vancouver. When the new hospital opens in 2026/2027, it will be the most digitally enhanced health organization in B.C.
I help lead leaders and teams digitally enhance their processes. I get a lot of satisfaction from supporting organizations with change management and helping frontline staff make the big leap to focus on digital applications.
My Experience at SFU Beedie
I was able to apply the course learning to my work seamlessly, which made it easy to see the value of this program. One of the applications that I worked on was an electronic shift trading and self-scheduling program for my unit. I worked with one of the IT professors to assess the application and work with my team to strategize on how we would implement it. That same professor helped us find applications with connectivity to the platform that we have at work.
There were a couple of weeks that were actually very difficult and the program pushed all of us, but as it progressed, I maximized my learning by really taking my time with each week’s readings and activities. I made sure to gain a full understanding of the readings and others’ perspectives before I submitted my posts.
Highlights
The first few lectures grounded me. They got us thinking through all the different parts of transforming an organization through digitalization and stripped down the jargon around the digitalization process. We all found the first few lectures excellent and particularly engaging.
I also really enjoyed looking at best practices and what people are doing in bigger industries. For example, it was really helpful to understand that many companies now instead of hiring an IT director, will have somebody in operations filling that role.
Advice for future students
What you put into the course is what you get out of the course, so take your time and mine as many nuggets as you can, and when you come into the program pick a topic or project and stick with it! I had to do the work anyways, so using the program to get it done worked wonderfully.
The program offers a fantastic opportunity for cross-industry learning from the other members of your cohort. I’m in healthcare and I learned a lot from my group members in the automotive industry and airport operations. In fact, I recently invited my classmate from the Vancouver Airport Authority to share the presentation he made at the Closing Synch Session with my team.
