The Beedie School of Business is host to a variety of events and opportunities for students to enhance their education and career opportunities. This is exemplified through their Business Career Passport Workshops, where students can attend and receive helpful information in six two hour long workshops. The workshops included: Self-Assessment & Finding Your Fit, Job Search Strategies & Career Management, Networking & Business Etiquette, Competitive Cover Letters, Professional Business Resumes, and Interview Preparation & Tactics. I will be sharing with you my experiences as I attend each workshop, to give you a better idea of what to expect.
The first workshop I attended was Interview Preparation & Tactics, where a BBA Career Advisor, covered a variety of topics from what to wear to an interview to how to answer challenging interview questions. Specifically, the workshop explained the STAR+ approach to answering interview questions to ensure answers are well structured with examples.
The workshop also helped tackle the most challenging of all interview questions: “Tell me about yourself”. We were first presented with examples of what to include and then were given several minutes to construct our own answers. Afterwards, we were paired off into mock interviews where we practiced our answers in a safe and friendly environment. This interactive approach allowed us to receive immediate feedback and improve our answers.
Overall, I found this workshop to be really helpful, and I now feel more prepared and confident to nail my next interview. There are no prerequisites to attend the workshops and they can be completed in any order. I also liked that there were a variety of times available to cater to my busy schedule. Whether you are a first year or about to graduate I think the Interview Preparation & Tactics workshop can definitely benefit you.
