When people think about scholarships, bursaries and awards, the mind automatically goes to the negative. For most people, the first thought is “there is no way I will win it, why would I apply.” Across Canada, that thought ensures that there is money left on the table every year, with the total amount estimated at more than $15 million. Yes, you read that correctly, 15. MILLION. DOLLARS.
But what does any of this have to do with you and the Beedie School of Business?
Well, unsurprisingly, we too have money that is left on the table every year because we don’t get applications. Too many students have that first thought: “There is no way I will win it, why would I apply.”
Here’s the thing: you don’t have to be the top of the class to apply for – and win – a scholarship, a bursary or an award. There are a lot of opportunities out there with various terms of reference, and not all of them are academic. Some opportunities look at community involvement, extra-curricular activities, areas of interest or even financial need.
Scholarships, bursaries and awards are “free money opportunities” meaning that you never ever have to pay them back. It is literally like applying to a company, and them turning around and saying, “Here is $1000. You’ve done the work. Enjoy.” Because of this, applying for these opportunities should be a vital part of your post-secondary success. You owe it to yourself to take advantage of this free money and at the very least throw your hat into the ring.
