SFU Business Professors Win Ascendant Scholar Awards

Apr 07, 2008

David Hannah and Chris Zatzick, assistant professors of management and organization studies at SFU Business, are two of four recipients of the 2008 Ascendant Scholar awards from the Western Academy of Management, a regional division of the National Academy of Management.

The award recognizes exceptional scholars no more than seven years out of their doctoral program who have demonstrated outstanding achievements in research and teaching as well as the potential for future career success.

Hannah’s research into trade-secret protection in organizations earned him a Best Paper award in 2000 from the Western Academy of Management. He also holds a 2005 TD-Canada Trust Teaching Excellence award and a 2005 Research Excellence award, both from SFU Business.

Zatzick’s research into high-commitment work practices won a human resources division Best Paper award from the Academy of Management in 2004 while his excellent teaching abilities consistently place him among the top 10 percent of faculty on the SFU Business teaching honour roll.

They will receive the award at the Western Academy of Management’s annual meeting March 26-29, 2008 in Oakland, Ca.

KUDOS to Professor Lindsay Meredith who’s won an Emerald Management Reviews Citation of Excellence for his article “A diagrammatical template for business market demand estimation” which appeared in the Industrial Marketing Management May 2006 (Vol 35, No 4). This award salutes the 50 best articles published in 2006 in management. Congratulations, Lindsay!

SFU Business BBA Students are bringing home the medals! Congrats to the faculty and students who have put in the effort to make us all look good:

* Royal Roads Case Competition – SFU won 2nd place in a very close race with Queens University at the Competition held in Victoria March 15 – 17th. Coach John Peloza and Case team members Adam Cotterall, Hon Lam, Jehan Lalkaka, Dana Samman and Sushant Trivedi were the winning combination.
* McGill Management International Case Competition – Another 2nd place for SFU against an impressive international competitor group — teams from Budapest, Georgetown, Bangkok, Aukland, South Carolina and Prague took a back seat to the three winners – National University of Singapore, Simon Fraser University (yea, team!) and University of Washington. Coaches Peter Tingling and Ginger Grant and team (Aram Askarian, Brian Li, Mila Lukic and Rey S. Lim) were dancing with glee at the outcome.
* Excalibur Competition – The Canadian University Tournament in Human Resources case competition is open to the entire country, with students from coast to coast matching wits in a highly challenging environment. Our SFU Team placed 3rd! Congratulations to team members Adam Cotterall, Carla Botteselle, Rahim Esmail, Melissa Schellenberg, Krysty Wideen and coach Ashley Bennington.
